Would anyone know what tuning Carlos del Junco uses? It sounds like it's not ET, but a compromise much like the Crossover-tuning.
And does he still use stock combs on the higher harps? And do his own work? It's hard to imagine a pro and innovator like that not benefiting from the now available customs...
What a player..

At the Dunneville Ontario retreat last summer he described his preferred tuning as "Equal but compromised." He laughed and said it's ET but with some tweaks to make the chords sound better. He likes his harps tuned to 444.
He doesn't like his harps set up "like Howard Levy" - i.e. very tight where the overblows are so prominent you can only hit any note with very soft pressure. Most of the harps in his case were Golden Melody and use the stock comb - he said that he prefers that. He works on his own harps.
Yes, he's a fantastic musician. ----------

Thanks for that Arzajac.
The thing that struck me was 444. A certain Steveland Morris likes his chroms tuned up that high, but I've heard he puts a bit of pressure on the notes to pull them down to 440 and get his distinct sound.
Is this the case with Carlos? I know there are some players who like to tune up to make them cut above the other musicians.

He does that to be able to put bigger vibrato without sounding flat. ----------

Ah, OK. I love these little foibles that players have. It amazing that anyone can sound the same with this funny little instrument! :)
Thanks again.

I forgot to mention that Carlos is offering Skype lessons and is taking new students at present.

He'll tell you about anything from the details of how he replaces broken reeds to jazz chord progressions and music theory.

I've done two camps with Carlos. If you've sat right next to him and watched his throat as he plays it makes perfect sense he tunes high to pull them down. It's like watching one of those city works vacuum truck unplug sewer grates. :)

We've had Carlos at our Harmonica Retreat in Dunnville, Ontario that Andrew mentioned for the last two years and one thing that amazes me is that he is using stock GM's that he tunes and works on himself. For me that puts to rest the arguement about combs, covers and tone. The player makes the sound for the most part. Not saying their isn't subtleties... But his tone and sound is his and is very distinct. That fact that he has plastic GM factory combs is impressive!
