Hi,
Please forgive me, but I can't resist. I've been going to a local Seattle area jam run by a great guitarist, vocalist and all around nice guy named Billy Shew for about three years, and it is consistently very good. Last night was over the top good, however. Billy does a great job of recruiting top Northwest talent for the jam band, and many of the jam participants are at that level as well. Last night the jam band was composed of great local pros - Chris Stevens, one of the top Northwest guitar players and vocalists, Hank Yanda on bass, Jeff Mason, harp, Mike Slivka, drums, and Billy on guitar and vocals. Sitting with a friend who is member of a regular gigging blues band and a very good guitar player in his own right, both of us remarked that we would have payed a pretty penny to watch the opening set. Then it got better! Steve Bailey, who I am sure some of you know, showed up and combined with Chris Stevens for a great set, playing both harp and some tasty guitar, as well as singing. Steve is a friend so I am prejudiced, but he is most certainly a top national harp player. The rest of night was nearly as good as several other very good players showed up. Pretty amazing for Tuesday night!

Feeling the same way about our little East Vancouver 'End-of-Line' Tuesday jam as well.

I run a tuesday jam in Bristol uk weekly and I know just how you feel!
A jam is only as good as the participants are..

I am interested though in the audience, do they chat and listen or keep quiet. We are used to a high level of talk (and beer drinking) but they seem to appreciate it but don't show it much.

What age is your audience? Ours is 20-30?

My musician buddies are twice that age

Hi Guys,

I think the average age of the audience is older - 40-60 or older. For the most part, they listen to the music throughout the bar, and applaud and dance. Also, the jam has such a good reputation that I believe the bar is much more crowded than it would be otherwise (However. I don't think I've ever been there on another night so I don't really know). In fact, I think this audience is generally more engaged and appreciative than those I've seen some at regular gigs - both for my band and other bands. Really pretty cool. Also, as someone who started out playing at the jam from a level well below the typical musician who shows up, the audience is very forgiving and supportive, as are most of the musicians. All of this really helped me get going and reach a level of competence.

Similar, our regular regulars are in the 40-60 range as well but with one outlier at 88 whose has been coming pretty well every week for the 8 1/2 years we've been going...with son and sometimes grandson in tow.
But we've been seeing a good mix of 20 somethings recently. Could be overflow from the 4 or 5 craft beer breweries that have sprung up in the neighborhood (with a good selection of those on tap).

Where is this Seattle jam? I'm close by and would like to attend.

Edit: Oops, just read the title of the thread again, my bad!

Evolvo - it's in Burien - on Ambaum Blvd. SW and around 150th. Also, Billy also runs a blues jam on Thursdays at a bar called Dawson's in Tacoma. I haven't gone to this one as much, but the times I've gone it's been equally good. If that's closer you should check it out.
