discovering it all for the first time. And then that discovery leads to another and another and another..

That's two great concepts there. For me it's like many have said: The harmonica is the closest instrument to the human voice, therefore it can be the most expressive to play once you reach a certain point.
The ability to express in a different way is huge for me.
Good idea slap!

When you say 'learning', that implies the journey, so for me it's the never ending factor which keeps me checking other peoples work to see what i've missed.

For me, primarily it's receiving those little gold stars, which I give to myself, when I reach yet another milestone.
Hmmm. I lost count(tongue in cheek).
I think I may have about 3 now...no 4...no!...5!
Oh well, here's goes..
- pure fun. Though, dragging myself out of the house is not always so easy. I'm not a social person really.
I nearly always play better when I know...
I neeeed to go.No matter what my mental or physical state may be.
- soothing for Soul and Spirit.
- and a great excuse to get out and hang with other like minded cats, too. The magic is wonderful.
Oh, also..
I find it hard to believe every, "you are the greatest". tee hee.
Though, I graciously accept their kind words, and take notes about what I may have had to do with it.
I fear it's mostly from the "cougars" checking out my basket.
I can dream can't I?

I enjoy the delusion I experience when I hear big walter play something that seems so simple, and I say to myself 'hey I could play that!'
ha ha.......not so simple, but fun to try, and rewarding too

Yes, I love making music, especially with other people. And I cannot get enough of the way harmonicas sound. Blues music is what keeps my blood flowing. But without question, it's all those cool people I've come to know and love that are undoubtedly the best part of my learning to play blues harp. I'd be a shut-in without my harps.

And I'm including all y'all Dirty Southers in my list of bluesbuddies. Good to know ya's

Michelle

Between sets: :"I kept looking for the horn player".
Also, finding a voice for what I mean to say that doesn't depend on words.

Sharing music with another musician or a random person on the street. We had a seminar with Aussie harp player Ian Collard last Saturday. I and another guy went to a park to jam after. Our mate encouraged us to put out the "hat" (my loot bag in this case) mainly in jest.
So I put out my busking licence and three dollars seed money (a $2 and $1 "gold" coin).
We had no amps and the street was noisy but passersby took pics, gave thumbs up etc.
A guy on a mobility scooter who had had a few wanted some John Mayall, which I remembered when he hummed it. He then demanded John lee Hooker, while rolling over my loot bag in his scooter. We complied. He dug in his pocket and threw in some coins. A woman with shaved head, bare feet, raggedy clothing and tatts also few in a few coins.
Well, we now had $3.95. Made a grand total of 95 cents. But we touched a couple of not-rich-at-all people enough to throw us some of their precious coins. I always value these gestures by those who have little to give most of all.

After a while it becomes a way of life not just a harmonica.

Oh yeah, when you are in the groove with the band and it's just flowing out and touching people...over-used expression, but that's my happy place. Like some kind of Zen-heroin-serotonin enhanced alpha state. Hardly anything better.

I love learning anything,

But for me the best thing is when I am improvising and I play something so cool it surprises me that I did it!

I hope you all have had that happen too,
