I finally found a speaker for my Fender 5E3 clone that feels good.

Are you ready for a challenge - could you pinpoint at least one of three:

1. Mic body/shell?

2. Mic element?

3. Mic transformer?

Can't meet the challenge but do have several questions for Hakan.
1) Rick Davis recommended a 10 inch WGS Veteran speaker before he stopped posting regularly here. Have you tried it?
2) Do you have a preference between 10 inch and 12 inch speakers when only using one speaker?
3) Do you think your mic cupping technique is more important than speaker choice assuming a mic that's harp friendly is used?
Thanks!

Is it an Ev Re635 mic?

I like the 5E3 for harp a lot. Sounds great with the G12Q in it.

SmokeJS:

I haven't tried Veteran. This is the first WGS for me. Marko Muddy on Facebook recommended this WGS G12Q and it seems like he knows what he is talking about. He also recommended WGS Veteran 10 inch.

I changed speaker since I wasn't too happy with my earlier speakers Jensen and Weber that had a bright sound and I had feedback problem with them. I am not sure improved cupping technique would have fixed the problem in this case, although I can improve my cupping. And this WGS sounded good directly in my amp. Suddenly no feedback problem. So my guess is that the correct speaker for your particular amp is very important. It's great that there is a lot of competence in that area around here!

I followed Adam Gussow's advice about 8 inch speakers so a bought a small Fender with 8 inch. That is my darling right now. But I heard that some harp players also are very interest in 15 inch. I have a 10 inch VAT amp and I like that very much, it's a great sound with original parts. It's only 6 watts but I mic it up, so it has been great for me to use at small gigs and jammin' with loud rock band.

Kingley: Sorry about the challenge, it was impossible to guess. But it's a body from AKG D125 with vent holes filled. The element is from a Shure 540. The transformer was broken when I tried to remove it from the Shure 540 mic but I had another transformer from a vintage Shure 545 mic that I used in this one.

The more i've learned about amplified harp i be sure of what's the truth.
It start in your mouth and finish with a speaker. The whole chain have to match. Most of them sound good in many other combinations but not in all.
There is good speakers, good microphones, good amp circuits who sound terrible in wrong combination.
WGS 10 Veteran is very similar to a Eminence blue alnico in sound. It just have a little cleaner highs. Many harmonica player do not like that.
WGS have a G10c speaker that's similar to this 12 speaker. Quite dark with damped high frequencies. But not dull and lifeless treble as many other popular speakers for harp. Just my 2 cents.
