Does anyone have a recommendation for a good 2nd position rhumba?
Dave Barrett's been teaching me, but his site's only rhumba is in 1st position. As I've been playing only about two years, I'd prefer not to try any 1st position so I don't get my licks confused. But I want a rhumba, because I'm lost if anyone calls it at a jam.
Is "Chitlin con Carne" in 2nd?

Hey M,
I think you are thinking of Dave's "Rollin Rhumba" study song (obviously a Rhumba but it's in 3rd position). I'm sure there's stuff out there in 2nd but don't know any off hand. None of the 1st pos. study tunes are rhumbas IIRC.
sorry, I know that doesn't actually help very much ;)

The classic - "Cross Cut Saw" (Albert Collins' version doesn't have harp so you can jam along with it. )
FYI - Chitlins con carne might not be considered a rhumba. Also - a piece of music isn't in 2nd position, or 3rd or ... It is in a "key", and if you want to analyze the scales in use it is in one or more "modes". YOU choose a position on harp to best fit the tune to your sense of right and wrong. So it is incorrect to say a piece is in 2nd position. If you are listening to a piece with harp in it, it is legitimate to say "the harp player is using 2nd position". I hope that helps clarify some terms for you.

Thanks, Mike. Actually, you're right. I was thinking of "Rollin Rhumba", which is in 3rd. Someone suggested "Early in the Morning" or "Playboy" (by Jason Ricci). Either of these seem good for lick mining, but I'm looking for an instrumental.

Thanks, Greg. So, to clarify: Does anyone know of some good rhumbas, in which the harmonica part is traditionally played in 2nd position?

Got love if you want it. Slim harpo. Shoji on bluesharptracks.com have a nice backing track if you're into that stuff.
Edit: sorry, missed the instrumental part. I don't know any instrumental rhumba. Is there any? "Cherry blossoms"? ---------- Pistolkatt - Pistolkatts youtube

I was gonna say 'scratch my back' but pcat beat me to it. A great tune and not real hard to play. Check out The fabulous Thunderbirds version of it (after you get Slim Harpos' licks down) Quite a bit more challenging, but an awesome tune is Gary Smith's 'Minor mambo' ---------- Lucky Lester

+1 for Minor Mambo - the live version from one of Mark Hummel's shows. There's months of study you can do with that one. I know that David Barrett has transcribed it somewhere Note - not to be confused with a studio version, which is good but an entirely different track.

I am with Greg on this. You can pick whatever position you want that works for you on any given song/groove.
You can learn a lot by experimenting instead of always playing from tabs or copying another player's interpretation from a recording. Nothing wrong with listening and copying, just not the only way.
Crosscut Saw would work. Also, Jimi Lee has a Rhumba track in G in his “Every Groove a Bluesman Needs To Know” double CD. Lots of other good grooves, too.

Carlos del Junco does a T-Bone Walker tune 'Plain Old Down Home Blues' on his Blues Mongrel cd. Slow rhumba, not sure what position he uses. YouTube has the T-Bone version. He may have other rhumbas on a previous cd that had a more latin flair, 'Up and at 'em'.

Micro, I am going to share with you the best 2nd position harmonica rhumba. It's in Bb, so use an Eb in 2nd position.
You're welcome in advance: Playboy

Thanks, everyone. "Playboy" is a great tune. I think I'll talk to Dave and see what he thinks.
So many of these songs are a great source for licks. I was hoping for a complete instrumental, and I think Gary Smith's "Minor Mambo" is a great one that may be beyond my skill level.
My goal is to get better at improvising during rhumbas, so I might learn a couple different songs. The Slim Harpo songs are within my reach. Just adding licks to my vocabulary, and the shuffle stuff doesn't work too well in a rhumba.

Thanks for the 'Playboy' . hadn't heard that one. Jason's on another harmonica planet. The rest of us should quit while we can. ----------

Rhumbas suck. If you feel the need, why not check out Gary Smith. He loves playing that stuff. Everything I know about playing rhumbas, I stole from James Cotton backing Muddy Waters.
Mirco - you do not need backing tracks. You need to speak a larger blues vocabulary. You need to listen to some great players and learn the language.

My favourite rumba is Minor Mambo by Gary Smith (both from album and Mark Hummel's Meltdown). Here is the my version of rumba (backing track) from David Barrett's site. I've played it in second position. :)

Micro, Why get stuck in 2nd position when there are better options. You Might try 12th position for Rhumba. The tonic is the draw 2" and the draw 5. The only notes that you need to avoid are the draw 3 and 7. Beyond that everything is game. Only semi hard note is the 6ob. I'm almost positive Jason Ricci's Playboy is in 12th as well as a lot of Carlos Del Junco's stuff. The only way to get better is to play a little outside your comfort zone every time you play!

I appreciate everyone's honest feedback. I really do, even if you think that rhumbas suck.
Even IF I didn't like the groove (which I do), I still should learn what to do in a rhumba. I'm not a frontman, so I have to play what the leader calls, and sometimes they call a rhumba.
I'm probably going to take a look at "Minor Mambo" and some Slim Harpo stuff. Jason Ricci is way way beyond me, at this point.
Thank you all for the suggestions. While it's true that I could venture out of 2nd, I want to stick to my home language before I venture out into other positions. Maybe I'm slowing my own progress in his way, but I'll just learn the hard way. The long, hard way. (I'll leave that out there, so someone else can make the joke)

@FBInsMan - Never heard this cut of Playboy so thanks for posting it! I posted above earlier a different cut. It's 2nd position not 12th :)
I do agree with you comment of playing outside your comfort zone. I think this track is a GOOD example of different 2nd position playing and teaches many good ideas for use in rhumbas. ---------- Ridge's YouTube

@ridge, Yea your are right. This is 2nd pos. Major. So it has the 5ob and the -2'. I got my wires crossed on this one because I was having a discussion with someone about 2nd pos major vs. 12th pos major. Here is a nice little known example of 12th pos plyaing by Jason. Cheers
