Larry Carlton on melodic solos. Important for harp players as well.

Here is an improvisation that I recorded recently, working off a short blues lick. So maybe this is what Larry is saying to do, in a blues harp context? Anyway I enjoyed doing it, imperfect as it is.

Thanks for the Carlton post. Good advice. I noted he mentioned the importance of listening to a lot of good music. I have read in many of The Iceman's posts about the importance of listening and listening deeply.
I love to make up melodies but I always wonder if they are original or if I am just pulling a tune someone else wrote from deep in my memory.

years ago i saw carleton try to do the right thing at a crusaders show...the spotlight guy decided carlton was the soloist no matter who was taking a solo (either a racist or a guitar freak or both i guess) so he would walk over to wilton felder, point at him, point at the spotlight and walk back to his place.. several times.. the stupid light guy never got it..
man he was great with that group!
