Spoiler: When you see an oboe always know there is something special coming right up.

people stopped because of the sheer numbers and volume

meanwhile take one of the best violinists out there playing on a multi-million-dollar (Stradivarius) instrument. thousands walk by a total of 7 stop to listen

chopsy - Good on you for finding the downside. Didn't see it coming.

I once answered a for-sale ad in Ann Arbor for a violin. I asked if it was a classical violin or if it was a fiddle. She played classical so it was no sale.

I thought it was funny at the time and if she is watching, I'm really sorry ma'am. I truly am and I hope you got a good price.

That's actually a bassoon but close enough. More like a "crowd event" than actual busking but pretty darn cool nonetheless.

If there's a lesson to the Joshua Bell video, it's don't bother busking in the DC Metro at rush hour!

Bilz - Thank you for the correction. Too late to correct other posts.

You are right about transit stations. Nobody goes there but to catch the 8:15. I had luck in Manhattan but only on weekends.

That is an interesting idea, done on a large scale. I wonder if I could get my brass quintet to do this. Start with a solo busker and have the others wander in as if they just happened to be walking by.

My son is interested in adding Bassoon to his skill list. In looking into this I found out why you are not likely to see many buskers with a bassoon. A low end student model is about $2000 and a top level pro model is $20,000-$30000!

One thing I wondered as I watched this was if I were there, could I have wandered in while the ensemble was still small and added some harp in a way that would have contributed and not gotten me chased off. Once the brass gets there, acoustic harmonica in the mix would be a non - issue.

This piece does work well for busking with the harmonica. Few people in the US know the words(I don't) but that doesn't stop them from humming along.

I watched it many times. Oddly, I related most to the little fella that climbed the post for a better view. I was always upwardly mobile.

I played flute along with it and had no problem. I don't see why harp couldn't work but C & D did not work for me and I didn't want to dig further. Been working on BB & Clapton's Rock me Baby so I've been exercising C and vocals lately.

Point noted on the big ensemble. I was working in my head how to attract a big audience with fewer entertainers. I think I would work on volume (within confines) and have at least one more on strings with an attractive but not gaudy visual. I'd still come up short crowd-wise but the share would be larger. The music would have to be powerfully pleasing w/ vocals. No getting away with playing to particular passers by. Do or die with a set regardless of audience.
