In the late 80s I was invited to sit in on a practice with very accomplished musicians. One of them had heard me R&R at another bar in Virginia City, NV. They were all in their 80s, estimated from my standpoint as a 30 year old. Slide trombone, bass, rhythm guitar and unbelievable piano. The guy had unlikely sausage fingers for a pianist but he was an outstanding player with a firm handshake. So I was invited to gig with them for their Sunday show in an obscure and lightly attended bar across the street. Dixie jazz mixed with old, very old standards.
Out of respect for these heroes I showed up stone cold sober for the show, unlike the practice session. My right leg shook 5 beats for every single note we played but I managed to make it thru the first song without collapsing. If I sounded good I had no clue. I certainly didn't feel good. The pianist flagged me and I was invited to sit out the set, have a couple of brews and give it another go for the second set.
All was well after that. For the record there were 3 people in that audience and 2 were friends of mine. Eventually those Sunday gigs filled the place by word of mouth. Total props to those who make music without lubrication. Not my cup of tea but I wish it was.

Interesting. I've heard that muscle control in the tongue is the first thing to go when someone gets inebriated, so I always have to weigh the possible upside of being less inhibited versus the negatives of losing technical ability. I'm sure that people who have been playing for 30 have such muscle memory that it doesn't make a difference, but for a guy who's only been playing for 2, it sure does.

Sober 27 years and change. Always been a hammy extrovert. Never really began to learn much until I sobered up although I tried for 15 years or so before that.
