Duck is a real bluesman. He's got that beat-down sadness in his voice. I played a set with him at his festival three or four years ago--he pulled me onto stage with him after I'd played in his juke--and he basically used one chord and one key for 45 minutes. His blues don't move; they sit and brood. I personally enjoy playing and listening to blues that move more than his, but I can appreciate the hell out of what he does. Not many players can sing and play in that particular way. People talk about the "Bentonia style," but here's he's just playing deep Delta blues in an old, timeless style.
