The SPAH jams were much better this year.
I spent time in the Mike Caldwell jam and the
Jimmy Lee jam. There were less people than trying
to play at the blues jam. Got to sit next to Jelly Johnson
the last night in the Jimmy Lee Jam and that was a treat.
Mike Ruben stopped in and he sounded the best I've heard him and RJ Mischo was there also laying down his blues style.

Will report more as my brain cells revive.

@ice maybe I don't know there were so many.
Also, Will Scarlett stopped in at that jam.

Totally agree with you, Diggs

It was great to share the same jam space with you! Jams at SPAH are always fun... and HUMBLING!

Cheers

Sounds great that they split the jams up a bit. The big blues jam was starting to get real BIG when I was last involved. Nice to see the "stars" playing traffic cop in these new circles of fun.

Yeah, I really dug jimi's jam. When I first read the description "diatonic jazz jam, I figured it'd be a case of me sticking my head in to see how fast the big dogs were running before I ventured off the porch.Jimi called tunes could handle and made sure everybody got a whack at it. His Groove seminar was great, can't wait to put the cds I bought on and get at it.-Greg

Jimi was really good. He does great for harmonica club type jams. His instruction is the perfect blend for all levels. The first night he really focused on showing players how to follow chord changes easily even with transition chords. Good on him. He's perfect for that environment.

Mike Caldwell had a nice jam going, too. He uses Lonnie Joe Howell on guitar. I backed them up on guitar the last night. Mike never quits smiling and he was really good about providing visual and auditory clues to where the song was going. He's a hoot.

As I was leaving Mike's jam, I peaked in a room and saw about 5 folks sitting around with Buddy Greene and playing Whiskey For Breakfast. ...

And so it is at SPAH... You get very individualized playing time with some of the best and highest earning harp players around.. You just have to be willing to stay up really really late....:)

I got to sit with Cara Cooke on guitar and just me and Buddy Greene playing harp. There were two other people in the room who didn't want to play. Eventually Kaleena and Mike Rubin showed up as well. It was fantastic! My 20 minutes alone with Buddy was like being able to play Michael Jordan one on one. For the people that were there, I was the guy with the black bowler hat with a marine band hat band.

@Philosofy I didn't go to any jams, for the most part, but I remember the hat!
Diggs had this completely beat to shit straw cowboy hat--distinctive.
I had my Suzuki hat, for the most part.

Philosofy - It was a pleasure to meet you there Friday night (I was the one with the tall, blonde wife :-)).

I sat in on the blues circle jam Friday night and was most impressed with Mick Zaklan's 5th position playing.

As usual, a great time! Thanks for the kind words Diggs, you sound great too! The Buddy Greene thing that really blew my mind was the vocal harmonies!

And I got to have breakfast with Michael!
I don't think I jammed too much, really--I was working all day everyday.
