Hello,

I've been working on building my own hap mic following some of the DIY tutorials I've found on youtube and such. I have questions about the potentiometer I bought. Okay so here is what I have...

10K-Ohm Audio Control Potentiometer with SPST Switch
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062298

First questions is, will this even work? All of the diagrams I see for wiring pots show a pot with 3 terminals. The pot I'm using has 6. Further google-fu reveals that pots of this nature use the extra posts to wire to a power source. Now, I'm planning on using a low-Z dynamic element, so I won't have a power source in the shell.

Can I just ignore the "extra" posts on the bottom of the pot?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

E

Yes the extra connections appear to be for a switch which you don't need. You just need the three connections which come out of the side. The center one is normally the wiper connection (the arrow on a schemetic), the other two the resistance -----/\/\/\/\/\/\/-------.

If wired properly, just turning the volume to 0 is electrically equivalent to turning a mic "off" - so you don't need the switch. You COULD use it to turn on the LED lighting you're building into your mic...... ;)
