I went to the grand opening concert in Bristol TN/VA of the "Birthplace of Country Music Museum" last weekend. The Bristol Sessions with the Carter Family (which Johnny Cash later married into)was the first country music ever recorded.
Pretty cool. Several generations of the Carter Family were there playing traditional mountain music, bluegrass, and country.
Before they introduced the headliner, Martina McBride, the announcer explained how "genres" came on the scene as a marketing term. He says if you go back to Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, The Monroes, etc. that genres were not played at a show, rather music was. Much of the mountain music or old tyme as they call it was heavy with blues, soul, gospel, country, and bluegrass. I don't remember the name, but a black man was used on some of the first country recordings ever made in Bristol.
Get this! Martina came on with full horn section, three female back-up singers, grand piano (no electric keys), and full band. She played Elvis, Ray Charles, soul, country, gospel, blues, and what blew my mind was when the bass sax player came up with Martina, pulled out a harmonica, and he joined her for "My Babe".
I must say I enjoyed this open minded mix of musical genres. Good stuff.
Catch Martina on tour for a full show. Great singer! ---------- www.facebook.com/catfishfryeband
