I never got to play with Muddy, till tonight so to speak. I was listening to this version of long distance call and noting how spread out the stereo field was. It has his voice center, his guitar slight right, buddy guys guitar far right. This left a nice spot on the left channel to add some harp. I approached this song with respect to the very laid back mood it has and also with my approach to music-1 take like I was sitting in onstage for the song playing me, not LW,BW,Cotton. I never tried to sound like the guitar or harp player on the hit records when playing with the old guys. Most everyone in my peer group tried to sound just like the record and I was the odd guy out with most of those guys but the old guys said they dug my playing and that is what mattered to me. The challenge for this song was to mix the harp in to sound like I was in the studio with them. Matching the room sound and reverb was the biggest challenge. That took about 10 minutes which was like 7 minutes more time than it did to record the song :-) I rarely do overdubs as my thing is all live and the harp is normally on a rack. That coupled with playing guitar and drums on my feet limits one harp playing. When I do an overdub it is 1 take and done.

thanks 1847! Sometimes I feel like assembling a band again and doing a cool grooving recording. The problem is the few people I groove with that are still alive are all over the country....... Then sometimes I think about recording all the stuff myself via overdubbing each instrument indivdually but that doesn't hold my attention long enough. Laying down a drum track, bass track, keys, guitar, and finally singing/blowing harp over all that takes too much time. I am 6'3 and about 220lbs so may be the big tiny little walter :-) Walter ---------- walter tore's spontobeat - a real one man band and over 1 million spontaneously created songs and growing. Here is another with me on harp. Done in 1 take with a low f marine band customized by my friend Burke. This is how I backed the old guys. I did my own sound and never felt right trying to do like whoever the harp player was on the recorded song. walter
