We live in this tiny village of 3,000 people and it never ceases to amaze how ecclectic it is. The house next door has been vacant for a year or so. A woman moved in a few weeks ago and came by the other day with a bottle of wine and introduced herself. I decided to return the favor today by baking some french bread. I also had a loaf for the woman living behind us who has a mini farm and keeps us in fresh veggies all summer. The 3 of us were at the fence talking and the farmer told the new woman I was a musician. That led to an hour conversation about things. Turns out she was an assitant recording engineer at Motown, Blue Note, and several other top labels. She recorded stevie wonder and we talked at lenght about the EV R20 that was his go to mic many a sessions, the EMT plate reverb they used the neve board, and on and on. I gave her a cd of my music and she just stopped back over to tell me she loved it. We are getting together this week in my studio. She is strictly analog(tape real hardware) and knows nothing of the computer age. She is unemployed and looking for work outside of the music biz. Sadly this computer home studio has wrecked pro studio engineer careers except for the top people. So now I have a neighbor to talk music, recording, and hopefully can learn a bunch of stuff from her. I have been teaching myself how to record my music for about 20 years and am finally at the point of being pretty happy with the music and sound. I also have dreamed of having someone close I could learn more from. One of my old Austin bandmates who went on to win grammy's/platinum records as a recording engineer now lives a 1/2 hour away teaching recording engineering at Ohio State Univ. He stops by to visit and check my sound and gives me inspiration. Now I have 2 top shelf people to learn from and the one from Texas also is a top shelf keyboardist, drummer, bassist, who plays with me when I have a gig. It never ceases to amaze me how the universe provides everything we wish for. This lady no doubt worked at United Sound Studio in Detroit where a lot of motown was recorded.
I had a strong connection to United Sound while I lived in Detroit, hanging with the Funk Brothers and also the Parliament/Funkadelic collective. I was also the studio piano tech for a while.
No doubt I came on the scene years after she left, but it is a nice connection anyways. ---------- The Iceman

Iceman: All I know so far is her first name - Ginny. That is cool you got to be around that scene. That is mentorship! She is excited to fool with the universal audio emulations of the studer/ampex tape decks, neve eq, EMT plate reverb, pultec eq's, and a bunch of other stuff on my computer. I do have hardware reissue universal audio 610 tube preamps and LA2A/1176 compressors and some good vintage condensor mics including the RE 20 which is a great mic when singing and playing acoustic harp through the same mic. The universal audio computer emulations are top notch and I am curious as to what she does with them. She also worked for Blue Note, GRP, and a bunch of other top name labels back in the days of tape and records and did a lot of jazz and jazz fusion recordings. I love the reverb Motown got and she confirmed they used a EMT plate reverb. That is what I use on all my stuff. Anyway, this is exciting to me. On the vocal/harp/instruments front I have found my sound and don't feel the drive to have a mentor anymore but I sure could use one on the recording side. Recording my music keeps me playing because so much of it still unknown to me. If my studio was taken away I would probably quit playing music because the kind of gigs I use to play just aren't around much anymore and I prefer to not play out than to be at a gig that is depressingly backround. Serendipity! The universe works in weird ways indeed. You've stumbled across a golden opportunity. Good Luck with it and I look forward to hear the coming recordings. Welcome back to the forum too, Walter. ---------- "Keep it in your mouth" - XHarp

Thanks XHarp! I am on summer vacation from teaching school with lots of time on my hand......... I agree with you 100% that everything we desire comes to us if we really know what we want. I don't expect the average listener to hear any noticable changes. My goal is record my sound as it sounds. No big effects and such. Just a clean sonically pleasing recording. I am in the hair spliting spectrum as one of my old bandmates from Austin tells me. He went on to become a grammy/platinum recording engineer for people like cher, natile cole, grover washington jr, linda ronstadt, and ran sugar hill studios for 7 years. He got hired to teach recording engineering at Ohio State University and lives only a 1/2 hour away. He has been helping me along for a few years now so I am as deep now in top shelf talent as I was when I playing out full time! Life is sure a great adventure. Walter
my other gig that gets back in gear in few weeks. It also allows as much creativity as my music does.

Hey Walter, maybe you can teach her about the computer age of recording music. ---------- Wisdom does not always come with old age. Sometimes old age arrives alone.

Hi Sarge: I will have to show her the basics with computer stuff but the gist of using a computer for recording is pretty much the same as using an analog setup the way I do it. I am really looking forward to hearing stories about her experiences. Walter ---------- walter tore's spontobeat - a real one man band and over 1 million spontaneously created songs and growing.
