Was back east last week and missed my last 2 regular Tuesday night jams. I've been sitting in with the house duo for the opening hour set for the last couple months.
Thought I'd be a bit rusty but I've been keeping up with the forum chatter about space, in and out of patterns, ahead and behind the beat.
So I took my time, set up riffs, then toyed with parts of them. Waited and listened for the chord changes. Kind of talked back at them after they happened. Coming in late or early through the turn around to set up the next chorus.
Felt really good, in control and more in the groove. I could hear what was going on a lot better too. (Which is a good thing since the boys often don't play 'normal' chord progressions.)
Thank you forum!

May I submit that you can play next what you don't know when you are improvising...
Now, it is obvious that you do know it- or you would not of considered attempting it...
But, does that mean you've played it prior, probably in practice though possibly too not in the same way you did this time.
So you can actually play things when improvising that you don't know for sure, in order to get to know them on a more personal level -
This is achieved by the realization that you "must somehow know it" or you wouldn't of played it...
Which in turn persuades you to continue exploring it...
So that you will sincerely deliver it with (CERTAIN know how ) in future instances
Thus the once previously unknown is brought to the surface and reveals itself as "wanting" to be known, and hopefully in a truly intimate way :)
Music, like a lover - longs to be known :)
