This question came up in an acoustic guitar forum I follow, and I thought of harp players.
The harp has a fairly complex sound to start with, then add amplification and things can get messy. But, I think the question can apply equally to guitars and harps. This is similar to a dry vs. reverb debate.
Personally, I have favor strongest fundamental note as possible, with 1 - 2 choruses on top as a special effect. No reverb. Maybe a little delay ( that's why I like the Lone Wolf V2 delay - analog, simple, and adds 1-2 choruses ), but only slap back.
And as far as harps go, I think my favorite for a strong fundamental would be my Suzuki Promasters. That's about the cleanest harp I've heard, and the single notes seem to have few messy overtones.
EDIT: And I like SM57's for the clean sound

overtones can be manipulated on guitar and harp, fat tone on harp is from controling overtones.it can be thick or thin by controling the air and shape you move it from lips to gut...it can`t be found in a book ,you have to play untill you feel it.....thats with harp with no amp or mic just it and you...

I think the only way to truly tell the fundamental note and it's overtones is with scientific equipment. The ear can vary from person to person.

I'm still kind of new to acoustic guitar, and I didn't know that you had that much control. Turns out some acoustic players like simple, strong sounding boxes, and some like lush, complex tones coming from their guitar. And I guess if your technique is good enough, you can get both from the same guitar.
@colman I'm going listen even closer to my tone and try to add or subtract overtones - I'm starting with a clean sound, so...
