Play the note I hear in my head...don't copy other blues harmonica stuff, memorizing licks, etc.

I listen to a lot of Miles Davis. Blues was dripping from his playing..he bent notes similar to what blues harmonica does.

And if you want to play fast, listen to a lot of Freddie Hubbard, a better model for aspiring speedsters than , say, John Coltrane. A master of technique, Hubbard had a strong, expressive tone he was the master of, he could play lyrically and with the sweetest sense of melody, and he could improvise the speediest, cleanest, most compositionally varied solos that have come out of the trumpet. His sense of dynamics was without fault in his best moments, which were frequent. This is to say that if you play rapidly, learn the when as well as the how . Hubbard, not Jon Popper, is the man to learn that from.

Possum Gravy!? Harpdude, where do you get it? Do you squeeze your own? I've been looking for some for a while, but all I can get around here is Gorilla Blood... good for dealing with hecklers but not for harmonica playing.

Don't really have any secrets yet...

Listen to what you're playing. Figure out what it means, what it's trying to say. Say that, and mean it.

I like to apply Ted's secret: "Play every solo like it's your last night on earth."

One day it will definitely be true.

I also think of my cousin, regular performer in pubs and clubs around Nova Scotia and abroad, who always travelled with his green guitar.
Same age as me, dropped dead of a heart attack without warning last year. So I play for him, as well as me.

This isn't a playing awesome secret as much as it is a being happy about your playing secret, and come to think of it, it might not even be much of a secret.

It was passed on to me by a friend of mine who is a helluva guitar player, blues and otherwise, and a helluva good guy. I was very nervous about getting up on stage with him and the rest of the band at one gig, and i said as much to him just before we cranked it up, something along the lines of I'm not sure I can hang with you guys. He said to me did you practice hard? I said yeah. And he said, with a little smile, then get up and play and don't worry about it. I never forgot it.

Now I can see a lot of forum members rolling their eyes saying great just what the harp world needs another player who doesn't care. But you know what I don't give a fuck about that. I work at playing better and , I don't step on the vocals or other musicians breaks. I pay great attention to constructive remarks on this site. I may suck and I may not, though I must be doing something right because I keep getting asked back. But you gotta have a thick skin if your gonna take up an instrument as a hobby and I suspect even professionally. There are a lot of critics out there (lord knows there are a lot here). Screw'em.

So I'd sum up my philosophy as:

Practice damn hard...... but then play/sing like no ones listening and dance like no ones watching.

Have fun.

And let the chips fall where they may.

That is all.

Bobo out.

5 honks bobo...

Is it even legal to dance like no one is watching...I can see someone touching themselves inappropriately if they do.

In a strip bar you might get away while dancing and making all those Fu^% Me Real Good Faces etc... :)
