Man I'm stuck on this guy. Wails away and has the best tone I've ever heard.

Stan, on youtube click on the share button. Scroll down and you'll see embed, click on that. Should show a web address highlighted. Copy it and paste it here. Oh yeah, Jerry was one of those under the radar players. I think he started out a s a Rock and Roller, wrote a lot of rock tunes in the 50's as Jerry "Boogie" McCain.

Yeah! I think he's my role model. I'd link to sound like him.

"Steady" is a great cut..

I would love to find a band that plays so quietly yet groovily. Makes it very easy to play this type of harmonica without straining.

Also, Jerry's tone is pretty cool - probably has to do with small inexpensive equipment.

Hi Guys, I'm trying to learn this one (Steady) but I can't quite understand what happens around the 1:23 to 1:32 mark. He seems to go into the higher register and I can't repeat it on my Sp20 Bb harp. Do you think he's got one of those weird 7 or 19 Limit Just intonation tunings or something?

Hi Tooka

in the first part of that he plays a lick
-6-78-8, -6-78-8, -7-6+6=5 (twice)

and then the triplet part of the lick switches to
-6+78+89(x6times)....,-7-6+6+5

whats throwing you off is that he is not playing clear single notes

hope this helps

cheers Bdr

That's great. Thankyou bdr, I thought this thread was going to slip into oblivion. Thanks very much I'll have another go at it later.

some years ago, I asked Mr. McCain about his rig on that session and he told me he used a Green bullet mic and a Silvertone amp with 2 x 12" speakers.

For those who haven't, check out Paul Durkett's take of Steady on the Got harp if you want it cd. I did that version with my band back in '98 though I had to come up with an ending. Jerry's still the main man though! Reminds me of a Jagger quote when he said "why listen to our version of king Bee when you can listen to Slim Harpo's"
