I realize that this subject has been discussed before, but I thought I would ask for some recent feedback about swapping out the speaker in a VHT Special 6 for an Eminence Lil' Buddy speaker. I am concerned, of course, about tone and volume. Bottom line: is it worth the $80 cost to make the switch? Thanks.

John, What kind of speaker is in it now ?? I put a Lil Buddy in my Bassman ( originally had two in my Blues DeVille )and they give a bit mellower tone, smoother middle. Along with the blue frame Eminence alnico's it sounds great. I think it is worth it but that depends on what is in the VHT now.If you have have a cheaper speaker in it I would throw in the Buddy, you will hear the difference.

I think Slim describes it well 'give a bit mellower tone, smoother middle'. I did it and the http://alnicomagnet.co.uk/category/mod_kit_vht mod. Very pleased with the result.
I think the mod made more of a difference.

i made the switch to the Lil' Buddy as well but switched back to a vintage jensen smooth cone for a more champ like sound.

It sounds like the change may not be worth the cost and effort.

John it all depends on the sound that you are trying to achieve. What type of music are you playing? There should be plenty of YouTube examples of harp through the stock speaker and Lil buddy. I am going to replace mine with a Jensen Jet Tornado. But as previously stated, all different changes are for a sound.

I play mostly Chicago blues through the VHT, so I'm looking for as much "tone" as I can get. When I play melodies in first position, I play a Shure SM57 through the PA.
BTW, listening to Nick play on YouTube doesn't do me much good. He's got great tone no matter what he plays through.

I believe that there a lot people on here that love that speaker for that sound. Have you done a forum search on the VHT and read through all of that?

Thanks for your input, Hondo and others. Yes, I have reviewed the previous posts on this subject, but I was just looking for some recent VHT owners who have switched speakers.

I have not found much on Youtube on the Lil Buddy. There are a few. I researched it some and took the advice from a few here on the forum. For me I just took the plunge. It wasnt like I was buying a car or something. I also had to wait 4 months for them.

You are correct, Slim. I have a tendency to over-analyze these things to the point of inaction. This is not that big a deal, so I ordered the speaker today. Best price was Sweetwater, $71.99, free shipping and no tax. I'll let you all know the results. Thanks.
