I plan to use a Shure SM57 to mic my VHT Special 6. What is the best method to do this, and where is the best place to put the mic?

I made up a little clamp which attaches a mic holder on to my amp. Point it directly at the speaker. Closer to the centre for a louder, brighter tone, further to the outside of the speaker for a warmer, not so loud tone.

"Closer to the centre for a louder, brighter tone, further to the outside of the speaker for a warmer, not so loud tone."

That's exactly the same thing I read when I Googled, "How to mic an amp"?

Seymour Duncan has a good illustrated article on mics and placement.

for a gig, that is correct. for recording you may well find that further away is better. Some of the break up and crackle associated with the speaker falls off pretty quickly with distance and the recording could sound better further away if you are not worried about bleed over. I think in isolation two mics are often used, one close and one far, with the best mix determined later
