I stick with a stick vocal instrumental Lo-Z mics for my amped tone. And I always use inline impedance transformers. I have Audix T50k and a lot of problems with its wire and some cheap chinese Soundking transformers which works perfect, but takes extra place on pedalboard. So I like size and tone I get, the fact it don't need extra power. However I always thing, is it possible I miss something not using a high quality mic pre like Focusrite or PreSonus or SSL? Any thoughts? ---------- Excuse my bad English.

Hi Boris,
I use an Electo-Voice N/D 967 mic with Hosa Technology MIT-176 Low-Z XLR-Female to Hi-Z 1/4" Male Transformer.
It sounds better to me than Audix T50 and I have never had problem with its wire--- However I always put shrink tubing where the cable enters the 1/4" male plug to reduce stress on the cable.
Cut and paste this link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/431404-REG/Hosa_Technology_MIT_176.html
I actually go 967 mic-> Hosa transformer-> Valco style tube amp-> line out---> PA.
I tried a small Art Tube Preamp into PA, but did not hear much difference from going straight into PA.
I like the small 5 watt amp better than pedals, but I realize you like effects.

I have ART Tube Preamp too, but it's not a high quality mic pre. I like my transformer more than ART Tube. But I never tried expensive preamps. And hey, one more happy N/D967 user. ---------- Excuse my bad English.

Can't answer your question about preamps. But I have also found the Audix T50 to have a negative impact on tone. The simple inline barrel-type IMT's work fine - I sell the Whirlwind Little IMP and nobody has ever complained about its effect on tone. If you don't like the idea of having that barrel plugged straight into your amp or pedal, you can use a short "headphone extension" cable - 1/4" female to 1/4" male - to relocate the IMT. ---------- *************************************************** /Greg
