Currently the amp is a stunning beast that does not need speakers. I'd like to retain the value of the originals and work with new ones. No way or maybe?
As subjective as this topic id the attempt to describe and discuss is certainly worth the effort. "My" sound leans toward Kim Wilson if I had to narrow it down.
Any suggestions?
What about a combination and/or a configuration that disconnects one?
Thanks.

I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions, but I like the Eminence 102, either the old blue ones, or the newer 35W black versions. Kendrick blackframes are cool if you don't mind spending a bit. One or two Fane ceramics in the bottom make the amp a bit heavier but give a full sound.

Regarding the old speakers, if they are original cones, the glue may lose it's tack and your voice coils may drop whether you use them or not, or drop as soon as they are played. I'm not a collector so I don't look at it with collectors eyes, but if the originals sound good I'd keep using them until they fail, check them out once in a while.

You can disconnect 1 speaker and just run 3, your amp is effectively a Bandmaster if you do this (though the original 3x10" were only made over a few months, but close enough for rock'n'roll as they say), make sure the 3 remaining speakers are rated for 20W plus. There's no appreciable effect on impedances doing this, the original 3x10" Bandmasters were a little mismatched when they came from the factory anyway.

Whenever you are replacing/mixing speakers in a cab make sure the cones all fire the same direction when tested with a 9v battery.

Does this also apply to a Bassman RI Mark?

Hi Jon,

Yes indeed, it changes the output impedance to 2.67ohms and the 6L6/5881 tubes see ~5K instead of ~4K & don't mind this at all. It also makes running JJ6V6 more viable if you can bias accordingly.

Compared to 4x10" expect a little drop in volume, a little less bassy "woof"? If your bias is on the cold side you may need to go up a few mA (15-20mA min.) to stop things getting too ragged? 3x10" do have a sweet sound though.

I wouldn't do this with an original bassman unless speakers have been subbed out/reconed with higher W voice coils, nor with a reissue running all original Chicago Jensen P10Rs.
