In theworld of guitar playing classical music on a steel string guitar is considered by many a mortal sin. Michael Chapdelaine shows it's the music and how it's played. Harmonica is somewhat the same with snobs turning their noses up but people like Cham ber and Robert Bonfiglio. leading the way to change minds.
Michael Chapdelaine is the only guitarist ever to win First Prize in the world's top competitions in both the Classical and Fingerstyle genres

Snob is a much more superior and juicer word then prejudice, and I'm glad you used it and not the latter -
We all need to examine our hearts and locate the snobbery that lurks beneath our shallow facade of worth and integrity :)

I know what I like and what I can do, past that it's a big beautiful world out there, and guys like those mentioned serve to move the humble harmonica along in the halls of REAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. How could I begrudge that? My gratitude goes to anyone who takes harp to a new and more sophisticated place. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

Interesting how the drummer took over the role of the heels of the Flamenco Dancer and the castanets. ----------

The title of this thread reminds me of my Music Theory teacher in Ventura CA in the 1970's, Frank Salzar, who explained that the "rules" were just observations of things that great music tends to have in common. These "rules" can help you as you are learning to understand music more fundamentally, they guide you and keep you from going too far astray and allow you to create music that is not horrible as you learn. As you get to understanding the true fundamentals of music, you don't think about these rules but you may find that your best work follows them more often then not. He would say you follow the rules to learn them until you are good enough to break them! I have to take his word for it as I am still learning. I think the idea goes beyond music though.

There's a large classical chromatic harmonica culture globally, especially in Asia. It's pretty amazing what pieces these virtuosos take on.
By the way, I studied with Robert Bonfiglio in New York in 1975, at Turtle Bay Music School, and it was him who had me start playing the CBH 2016 chromatic. Cham Ber Huang, the designer of the CBH, was the head of the harmonica department. ---------- Call me J
