What makes the hering combs crack in the spring area. I have a 7148 and 5148 bought used: both w/cracked combs which I have glued and hope hold together.

I have used Hering Chromatics since the '90s and never had that happen. Wood combed Hohner 270s on occasion would crack. Generally I gradually destroy the softer Hering reeds. I used to buy a new replacement Hering Combo when a reed finally died.
Let me know if the glue doesn't do the job. I may have one or two combs tucked away somewhere. ----------

I have an 7148 w/ a clear acrylic comb that broke into multiple pieces at the spring area. I blame the case mostly, it allows the harp to slide back and forth inside depressing and releasing the button springing the harp back and forth during transport. There isn't that much material in the spring area wall and the comb becomes stressed from spring pressure and button bouncing . Repaired mine using a ABS specific adhesive to glue pieces back together and added an epoxy filler w/ paperclip reinforcement after glue dried. 6 yrs+ ago and still better than new!
