Here's somebody who I don't believe we've mentioned here. Arthneice "Gas Man" Jones was a presence in the contemporary Mississippi in the 1980s and 1990s. Howard Stovall, past president of the Blues Foundation, played keyboards in his band.
Jones is a pretty good harp player in the modern Mississippi mode--right up on the vocal mic. Enjoy.

Is that recording live from the audience or off a soundboard?
Very rare to hear a live band play this subtly yet keeping the energy cookin' at the volume on this clip.
Gas Man is excellent. His delivery (vocal and harp) is short sharp and snappy.
So this is that modern Mississippi regional sound? ---------- The Iceman

That sort of sound is definitely where the music down here was circa late 80s and early 90s. I'm not sure where it is now. My sense is that things have fragmented a bit. There's a sort of re-roots movement led by players such as Super Chikan and Deak Harp on the one hand, with Terry Harmonica Bean in there when he does his one man thing. One the other hand, you've got a strong soul blues influence that shows up in guys like Jarekus Singleton and (to a slightly lesser extent) Mr. Sipp. Smoother, more urban. The stuff Jones was playing is basic electric trio stuff, with keyboard added. It's the Jellyroll Kings sound, more or less. Electric trio + acoustic harp. THAT is a characteristic Mississippi sound.
