Am I right in thinking that a Weber 8A100 will actually fit in a Champ cab by simply removing the bell cover? I know I made a 10A100 fit in a Zoo 1 this way.

Hi LSC. I bought a pair of 8A100 from the factory and they had no bell covers.
I assumed that was normal. I'm certain they'd fit. It's hard to imagine a smaller back end on a speaker. They're smaller (magnet diameter) than the ceramic sig8 in my hg2 cab. May protrude rearward a little further.

I have a tweed Champ clone using a cabinet that is the same physical size as the HG1 that I procured from Mojo Musical Supply. I have a 8A125-O with the bell cover attached. It fits just fine.

The original tweed Champ cabinet is physically smaller than the HG1 or many 5F1 replicas.

Picture on the website looks like mine. Not a bell as such, but a U-shaped cover, 3/4" thick
