Looking for an introduction to 3rd pos chrom style playing. What disadvantage would there be in using a Hohner soloist to get my feet wet?

If you have a good grasp of 3rd pos on the diatonic - either of those will do the trick...
The soloist has no button - but that's not a disadvantage, just think of it as different - it is a great harp to blow, but really not necessary to use before learning to navigate a chrom :)

The disadvantages would be that:
1) You would lose the chance to use the harp to also play in Eb (button held in on C chromatic makes it a Db harp, 3rd position on Db diatonic is Eb. However, Winslow would call it 10th position, because the chromatic is in C.
2) You would be passing up the opportunity to explore using the button to add grace notes or sharps and flats in any position.
Advantages would be that:
1) It would cost about 1/3 what a chromatic costs.
2) You could bend 1/2 steps with usual bending technique on the holes that have a whole step between blow and draw (1 & 3, 5 & 7, 9 & 11).
Chromatics have the button for the sharps and flats, and you can learn valved bending for inflection and for sharps and flats.
A chromatic offers the future opportunity to expand skills and provides two keys. A solo tuned 364 is less expensive, but more limited. ----------

Also, the holes on a 364 are smaller and closer together, making octaves easier to play. ---------- Winslow Find out about the 2014 Spring Harmonica Collective! Thanks for the replies all. The budget currently will dictate the decision to go with a 364 although I'm really itchin' for a couple of X-Reed Chromabenders. I don't think the old dog (just turned 60) will get serious into traditional chromatic playing anyway, just looking to add some variety to the blues riffage.
