I'm with you Ice! A friend gave me a Carlos CD and if you really listen hard he is doing some amazing stuff. Technically and musically he is amazing. Not sure he studied Dennis though.

@Milsson: Maybe you don't realize this, but Carlos has been playing this sort of stuff, if not with quite this level of bravura, since before Dennis ever picked up a harp. I know because I was there. I became friends with Carlos around 1990 and met Dennis--and gave him a lesson in my NYC apartment--not too long after that. Dennis has always been a terrific student of other harp players (George Smith, most notably; I remember when he was enacting his resolution to tab out all of Smith's stuff in the mid-1990s) and it's more likely that what you're hearing in Carlos's playing is where Dennis got some of HIS stuff, not the other way around.

Every now and then, of course, it works the other way around, and the older and more experienced player steals from the younger guy. I did that back in 2009 when I decided to woodshed a particular approach to 1/16th notes that Jason had shown me at his Florida apartment back in 2000 and that I'd never really worked out. That led directly to the stuff I did in "Crossroads Blues"--a way of playing that really was something new for me, and for which I'm happy to credit Jason as the inspiration. (When I was 'shedding, I actually set my metronome to the fast tempo Jason achieves in "Mellow Down Easy"; 135 or so, which is very fast indeed. And that become my goal, with 120 as my baseline.) So sometimes the creative bloodlines, as it were, mix and mingle in unexpected ways.

Thanks for the clip of Carlos, Larry. That's exceptional stuff. I enjoyed the clip of you as well. More like that.

Have known Carlos since early 1990's when we met at Howard Levy's Masterclass at Augusta Heritage. Since I lived in Detroit, I would drive to Toronto to hang out with him when he was doing his first duo gigs and recordings. We used to share cassette tapes of music that influenced us, so I know Carlos' first and only main harmonica influences were Dave Burgin and Howard Levy. The style he developed was a blending of these two.

I would be very surprised if he was influenced by any other harmonica players beyond these two. He did love listening to jazz sax/piano duets as well as a lot of film music for spy movies like Our Man Flint, which inspired a lot of his avante garde original music compositions.

the head from the Del Junco tune.. shows up at the end, is his composition Run Me Down from Blues Mongrel. though it has a jazz aesthetic that could have been borrowed from lots of people...

nice playing iceman!

That video of The Iceman playing Summertime was taken at a Jon Gindick Jam Camp in Atlanta in the early 2000's. I'm in the video and I recognize a lot of old friends I haven't seen in a while. Both Jason and Dennis were at that camp too. I was still fairly new having only been playing a couple years and was blown away by all the talent there. I'd never seen anything like it before!

BTW, if I remember correctly the guitar player playing for Iceman was Frankie Moats from Atlanta. I think he died a few years ago.

I am curious…….
How would carlos rate
his performance here?
After repeated listening,
It does not sound like he is playing with his band? Where is the groove?
Sorry, it sounds like he has jet lag.
Yes carlos is a fantastic player
And yes there is lots and lots of good stuff here, no doubt, it just seems to miss the mark, a tiny bit.
Did I say that out loud?

Thanks for posting that clip of Carlos. Love hearing him play. His chops and tone are just wonderful. Really inventive ideas and always sounds fresh and exciting and never too cliched. Along with Todd Parrott, Carlos is my favourite overblow player to listen too.
