Let's say The Devil shows up in my downstairs studio and says, "Heath - I see you've got both the VHT Special 6 and a Kalamazoo Model II. I think you've been greedy. Now I want to hear you use them BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. No pressure."

He whisks me immediately away to some kind of underground club. The place is packed, pale faces look up at me. Smoke hangs brown and thick.

Ok. So what would using two amps - these two amps in particular - do to my sound?
How might I make this work for me?
How would I connect them?
What might be the overall effect?
What about amp placement for best advantage?

Oh - The Devil's also letting me borrow his Digitech RP350 with Richard Hunter's patches.

Thanks guys - just throwing this out there. Many of you are way more knowledgeable than me, and I wanted to hear your opinions.

Heath

you could ask adam, he likes to use two amps
then again perhaps it is a trade secret?

i bought a small stool from target
i would set the vht on it's side and just put the zoo on top.
plug you're mic in to volume one
stick a guitar cord in volume two
and run it to the #1 input of the vht

For those interested, the very talented Mike Fugazzi had the following to say about my theoretical question:

"I did this with a bf champ and vibro champ. Bigger tone that is more complex. Will have more bass and maybe a hair more volume. Biggest impact is tone. I always kept them close to each other. The wider spread isn't so important unless you use stereo effects.

Run the vht cleaner. Will sound great. Be careful how you split the signal so you don't lose mic output. An active splitter or stereo effect works best. A passive splitter might drop your mic signal.

You'll want to mic both amps live. Easiest is to have sound guy mix mono."

Lots of guitar guys run two amps--SRV, Neil Young, Bonamassa to name a few. Switchcraft and others make an aby box for this

Hi 1847 - Can you clarify this? I'm not sure I get it...

"plug into a boss dd3
it has two outputs one wet one dry"

I do have a Boss DD7. How would this all work?
What would using two amps - THESE two amps - do to the sound/tone?

Thanks!

You can run the amps at the same time, or run one into the other. I'd suggest, with two small amps, you run them with a signal splitter rather than daisy chain.

the direct signal from the delay
will go to the first amp unaffected
the delayed signal will go to the second amp
creating an echo. i almost never do this..... if you do, it is good to separate the amps
it can be quite effective.
when i use echo, i plug my mic into the delay pedal
then into the input of the first amp, then daisy chan into the 2nd amp
that way ,both amps play the un effected signal
then the echo, it is less distracting, to me anyway
it is best to experiment, see what you like best.

last week i used my 5 watt hughes ketter amp head
ran a line out to the bassman.
it worked way better than expected.

you could always do like rod piazza, and run 2 harpkings together
if you ever get a chance to talk with him,
don't say... hi rod, tell him, aren't you richie blackmore
he will get a kick out of it, hey man are you in the band deep purple?
