Hi,
I found a Epiphone Valve Jr ridiculous cheap. Is so cheap, that I can fully mod it (using 2hand stuff of course) for the average price of a 5 tube amp im my country.
Really cheap.
So, I going to do this mods:
- Tung Sol 12AX7 - EH EL84 - Jensen Mod 8-20 speaker - LW Mods.
I want to record this mods so we all can hear what does each mods add (or take) to the sound.
Right know I can record whit one of these two option:
- Canon T3i video camera, Full HD. - Xenyx 302usb mxer, whit a cheap vocal mic.
What would you use?
thxs!

R-zab...I really don't know...if you saw my '5amps' thread, you'll see I despair of being able to capture this. 3 very different valve juniors which everyone agreed sounded indistinguishable. I dunno, maybe the recording device matters, but I suspect it's the playback which is more important. Incidentally, I'm planning to modify my stock v2 with a LW mod. After comparing my 5 5 watt amps (actually I have a couple others also), I think it's important to include a tone control. My vj with tone control is much better to get along with than the others.

Maybe you could run an acoustic recording of your playing thru it, before and after each mod. If you keep the signal volume the same and your amp and mic placement the same you should get a very good sample of what your mods are doing to your sound. As long as both of your recording set ups can give an accurate recording it doesn't matter which one you use.

You got the best result if you record the sound with something made for that purpose and you can put in pictures later in a video editing program. Like this:

Of the options given I'd go with the cheap vocal mic. Neither the camera mic or a low quality dynamic mic will give you an accurate representation of tone, but at least you can put the mic where it needs to be if you use the vocal mic and proper mic placement is important.
Superbee is right about the fact that capturing what the amp really sounds like is very difficult but even if you do capture the true tone we are still getting a compressed mp3 file and playing it back through our own computers which further strips the sound of it's true character. I'm not saying don't try to get the soundclips, I'm just saying that if you can't seem to capture what made the mods sound good, you are not alone.
I also agree with arnenym that you need to capture the sound on a dedicated sound recording device and then mix it with the video. Or you could just bypass the video all together and just have a picture of your amp with your soundclips in the background
