Mark Lavoie's name has come up several times on this forum, but almost always as a harp-comb guy rather than a player. He deserves better than that. He's a country-style player best known for the fact that he was Sonny Terry's chauffeur in the summer of 1976. (He tells that story around the 28:00 point in the video below.) He's got a laid back style, very relaxed, with a big full tone, fine vibrato. He's particularly good on the low harps. In the table tennis community, one term of high praise was that a guy had "good touch." Lavoie has good touch. He's got finesse. He takes care with the instrument rather than brutalizing it.

He sure is a terrific player and for awhile, he made the best combs for Hohner MS series harps, hands down. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

He's tongue blocking but he didn't learn that from Sonny Terry.

Yay! Mark built up a harmonica for me back in the day. He sealed the comb with beeswax, fined tuned it and made it kick butt. Never heard him play until now. Totally agree with your assessment, Adam. ---------- Ricky B http://www.bushdogblues.blogspot.com RIVER BOTTOM BLUES--crime novel for blues fans available at Amazon/B&N and my blog THE DEVIL'S BLUES--ditto
