I dont cross in C very much, but when I do ......
the cats and dogs start screaming after about 16 bars. I figure it's time to check out a Low F. I usually play Hohner but the only one I see at Rockin Rons is a Thunderbird for $120.00. Rather not go there. I need a good harp that is fairly responsive ( I can tweak it some ) and fairly air tight. I dont like stainless steel reeds. I see Lee Oskar has a low F. Any suggestions, comments. Thanks. Rich

Hi Rich,

The Seydel Session Standard (brass reeds) is a responsive, airtight harp available in low keys, at a reasonable price.

I agree with you on the Thunderbird - they must be nice, but I can't afford them.

I play Hohner Golden Melody and also found need of a low F. I went with the Suzuki Promaster. It took quite a bit of tweaking to get response like I wanted for overbends. It does the job, but will never have quite the tender feel of my sweet GM!

I use low F gigging a lot

very useful for playing behind the melody or chuggin'

just checked my case and it is a Special 20, nuthin' wrong with it, good full sound and it has worked well for quite a few years

like harpdude61 I am a GM player through and through, I just wish they would do more tunings OTB

Hohner has phased out the low Big Rivers, Special 20s and Marine Bands. You may still be able to find them in old stock or used.

Even Seydel 1847 is about $90 and Session Steel is around $60 and they have Stainless Steel reeds! Loud and long living.

P.S. I'm affiliated with Seydel, but I love them!

I lower Big Rivers in G with a little solder to low-F. With an airtight comb they are superb. I wouldn't go any lower than F, though. If you can find low keys, I would suggest that.

I think Harmonicas Direct (in UK) have a few low Es left, last time I checked.

I have a Lee Oskar low F that is an ok harp. The six blow doesn't overblow well though. If you want to use overblows I wouldn't recommend LO:s. Otherwise it's a fine harp after basic gapping 15 min. I recently bought a LLF thunderbird because a discount. Very meditative to play but I can't use it for blues or bend anything below four draw. :)

I posted a sample of the LLF earlier. Here's the link again if anyone's curious. http://youtu.be/KFN6at29Yqc

Oh! And here's a vid where I play my LO low F. I experimented a bit with playing absolutely as soft as I could so maybe it's not absolutely "true" sound. The rig I use, a sm 58 into an focusrite Scarlett 4i2 is very nice for reproducing sound though so in that regard it's probably "truer" than a lot of other YT vids.

Just bought a Seydel Session brass reed lo F harp. A bargain I feel at the moment. Can't really fault it. I have a tbird in same key. Yeah, it's probably better, but over twice the price.

Delta Frost Low F harps are a bargain. If you want to use old covers, you can just get the reed plate and comb for $20, or get a whole harp for $38!

Slimharp I have a couple of very nice Seydel 1847 Silvers. They were mixups on an order so technically not brand new. I can make a deal on one if you email me.
