This past Friday, I attended Aki Kumar's CD release party. Aki is always good, but he really brought the house down on this night.

I encourage any of you to buy a copy of Aki's CD. It's really fantastic. Let's support the modern blues scene. There's a sample of the CD at his store's page:

Here's a video of the night's final song, "Low Down Dog." This song is becoming one of Aki's signature tunes, I think, and they really do a great job with it here:

What does "Sonny Jr. 4-10" refer to? Man, you all are too good at harmonica. I will get there eventually.

Thanks. I thought the 4-10 referred to holes on the harp, or bowling pins.

Aki is a bad ass player. He gets better and better every time I hear him. I'm looking forward to hearing g the CD and seeing the videos that Russ took.

On a side note, the Rod Piazza version of "Low Down Dog" on the California Blues album has some great chromatic playing on it.

Cool clip, but definitely not the best example of Aki's abilities. I was disappointed that the band didn't really seem to be picking up on the hits he was trying to lay down at the outro... they just kind of played right through them. Really dug the drummer though.

Aki has worked his ass off and continue to improve. He recently left his job (he had a good one in the software industry for a well known major firm) to focus on music full time.

The drummer is none other than June Core- one of the best blues drummers on the planet, he is Charlie Musselwhite's regular drummer. The guitar player on the right is Johnny Cat Soubrand - he plays with Terry Hanck band (http://www.terryhanck.net/band.html) and the one on the left is Jon Lawton of Little Jonny and the Giants (http://www.littlejonny.net/#!info/c161y)

Sorry I don't know who the bass player is - but the lesson is - surround yourself with great musicians whenever and wherever possible!

And Aki plays a BlowsMeAway wood mic with a black CR element:

There is another video of Aki playing at his CD release party with famed guitar player Rusty Zinn sitting in - but its on Facebook so I don't know how to display it here. You can find it on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BlowsMeAwayProductions

Aki is an outstanding player. I will definitely buy his cd and I hope he travels to new England. He's got a classic musical style and persona. I enjoy his music.

Wow... what a commitment he's made to pay the bills playing the blues, his Wife must be an extremely supportive Spouse! Looking forward to his touring show - I love the music he's playing and love the players he is attracting to help him spread the blues news...Go Aki, carry the torch to Pittsburgh :)
