To me this year's Harmonica Collective has the best vibe ever. The addition of Magic Dick is NOT just for high profile name sake attraction. As some of you may know personally or have seen in AG's documents Dick is a certified harmonica geek just like us. All things harmonica of interest to this great mind and performer. He's an intellectual, engaged, humble, funny, and philosphical on a level few would expect from a true rock star. He can talk for hours about harmonica, it's history, it's players and is a great listener as well. Having a hero of our instrument in a teaching capacity this year is a tremendous and very exciting reality. Winslow and I have had marathon phone discussions preparing for this years event...Where somethings have been a bit easier since this our second Collective we have certainly not made it easier on ourselves changing, improving, and making tough decisions were sure will fine tune this event even better than last year. No detail goes unnoticed or discussed by Winslow it is a true pleasure and comfort to work with such a great player and well organized proffessional individual! The Harmonica Collective is an event that truely wishes to not compete with or repeat any other type of harmonica related teaching get away. We wish to bring you cutting edge information about the harmonica and all it's applications without predjudice and with as many varying opinions respectfully presented together. That is the nature of a collective. Our idea has been to bring together the most informed and experienced guides to present you with information on how to play this instrument, how to fix and modify it, how to amplify it, how to perform with it and how to educate yourself about it in ALL it's capacities! This was Winslow and I's critea for choosing our expert guides. Overblowing/overdrawing, advanced bending, tongue blocking, tongue switching and embrouchures are just some of the physical techniques that we will discuss. The X-Reed harmonica will be demonstarted and literally disected by Richard Sleigh. Additionally Richard will be teaching regular set up, embossing, tuning, gapping and reed arcing for the overblower and non alike. Richard is a fantastic player and master of many various styles of music and instruments alike. We are honered to have him back at the 2014 Harmonica Collective! Stylistically the Harmonica Collective attempts to make a varied and open approach as well. It's important for us to give you the details, tools and layout of the instument itself through our guides who specialize in country, blues, jazz, Irish, folk, and beyond. Respectful diversity is our aim. The idea is to expose all students to and immerse you in one or all of these styles with the best collection of teachers we can assemble. Our guides are chosen because of that musical diversity, their fun attitudes, dedication, experience and unparraled agility at their chosen musical applications. No topic or style is unacceptable to us. Look yall were going to have lots of fun, Buzz Krantz will be there to ensure none of us get too serious and run the nightly jam, Jimmy will be teaching crazy Irish harmonica tongue switching, harmonies and more, Winslow will guide you through Chromatic harmonica, French canadian styles, Blues, XB-40's and beyond. Magic Dick! Richard Sleigh! Dan Ridge way (an underated master) will be there for one on ones and expert guide assistance. I'll be there talking about overblowing, amplifiers, mics, pedals, the music industry and more. Please check our website and give this even some consideration. Thank you so much everyone! -jason Ricci

Last year my experience at the Harmonica Collective was amazing!
Harmonica Collective was the most intensive harmonica instruction of my life, provided by multiple masters of harmonica in their own areas of expertise. Even now I am continuing to revisit and incorporate information from last year.
Intensive small group instruction with accessible teachers is wonderful! ----------

Thanks, Doug. We're looking to amp things up a bit this time around.
We’re looking to avoid overload by having fewer subjects, but having longer sessions, as 60 minutes often seems too short. (We’re still working out whether to go for 75 minutes or 90 minutes; each has its own logistical issues.)
We’re placing everyone in small groups of less than 20, and every group can follow the schedule and get every subject from every Expert Guide, or make their own path if they prefer to skip some subjects and focus on others.
Every morning we do a full panel, with all Expert Guides and the assembled group doing a big workshop for an hour before we split off into smaller groups for more hands-on classes.
Sepcial guest starts Buzz Krantz and Dan Ridgeway will be on hand at all times for one-on-one breakouts for anyone who needs a refresher on basics or to et up to speed on something challenging. We’re committed to having a safety net in places so that everyone walks away with a full and valuable experience.
Evenings we have hosted jams with Buzz as jam leader.
More news as it develops.

It was very intensive, and great folks to hang out with.

Thank you 1847 for listening were very proud to add Dan to the team this year. Last year he was a student and Rocky Balboaed his way to expert guide! That was a straight Hohner Golden Melody most likely with the action set by Dan could even be out of the box.Maybe h'ell chime in…Thanks!

I just got to attend the first day last year but it was REALLY worthwhile.
I met Dan Ridgeway and sat at the jam with him, cool guy, good player. Met Kingobad (Danny), too-had a little sushi with him.
Not sure yet if I can be there or not this year-a little health stuff going on and I don't feel much like playing, but its getting better.
Its MONEY WELL SPENT.

@1847 - It's a G Golden Melody with the covers opened up. Reeds are gapped and embossed. Replaced the comb with one of Tom Halchak's (Blue Moon Harmonicas) laser cut cherry combs. I think he CNCs his wood combs now. Anyway, it's far from OOTB :D Glad you liked it!
I'm really excited to be a part of this years Harmonica Collective. I'm looking forward to 3 straight days of intensive harmonica nerdery with all the participants.
If you're on the fence, get off it! Magic Dick is going to be teaching and performing. Massive! James Conway is going to blow your mind. This cat can circular breathe, tongue switch and much more. Winslow Yerxa is one of the most knowledgeable harmonica players I've ever met and he can explain what he knows in ways that make sense. You'll have access to Richard Sleigh... he's apparently good at working on harmonicas or something. Jason Ricci will be there talking about the New Orleans Saints, cats and occasionally playing harmonica. I'll be there to assist as best as I can along with Buzz Krantz. ---------- Ridge's YouTube

I spent parts of Friday and Saturday at David Barrett's Harmonica Masterclass. (I taught tongue blocking and bending classes and performed in the concerts with Eric Noden on guitar).
The event was all blues, and heavily West Coast, with David, Gary Smith, Kinya Pollard, Mark Hummel, and Rick Estrin on board.
It was a great experience not only for the music but for the many friendships that are nurtured mainly at harmonica events.
if you weren't able to attend the Masterclass, or even if you did and it left you hungry for more, you still have time to sign up for the Harmoncia Collective and receive some excellent harmonica information from a completely different set of Expert Guides.
The Collective ranges over a wide variety of styles, including not only blues but jazz, rock, and traditional music (James Conway is an amazing Irish player, while I have a strong background in Scottish, Cape Breton, and French Canadian styles).
Hope to see you there! ---------- Winslow Find out about the 2014 Spring Harmonica Collective! SPONSORED BY Find out about the 2014 Spring Harmonica Collective! BIG REMINDER the cutoff date for DISCOUNTED ROOM RATES at the Harmonica Collective is today, May 12th, 2014. THIS IS NOT THE LAST DAY TO SIGN UP FOR THE COLLECTIVE! However, after today attendees will have to pay anywhere between 119.00-150.00 $ ( 30.00 - 50.00 more per day) and risk not having a room available at the event at all. Of course, one could also still attend the event and stay elsewhere, possibly even cheaper, but staying AT the event is at least half the fun! There is still 16 days left to sign up for our amazing event featuring MAGIC DICK, Jason Ricci, Richard Sleigh, Winslow Yerxa, Buzz Krantz, James Conway and "Harmonica" Dan Ridgeway (May 28th-31st, Indianapolis Indiana). Come to this event even if you have to drink muddy water and sleep in a hollow log!
The Crowne Plaza offers Harmonica Collective attendees free airport shuttles and parking, complimentary wi-fi, and a full-service restaurant. Harmonica Collective attendees receive a special room rate of $91 per night (plus tax).
NOTE AGAIN: CUTOFF DATE FOR THIS RATE IS TODAY: May 12, 2014. Be sure to book by this date to assure the best possible room rate.
To book by phone, call 317-244-6861.

Just a few words First: I WISH I could claim Dan as a student but he's done so much of this work ALL on his own with very little help from me or anyone. But thank you Frank for the kudos to Dan I am very proud of him but he was kicking butt when I first met him in Rhode Island. Second just wanted to say we have many more Items available at the collective both for the Auction and the raffle. Thanks everyone and super amped for the 2nd annual Harmonica Collective. Massive!

@Frank, thanks for the props!
It's definitely no secret that Jason's playing has been an massive influence on my playing, but it's encouraging to know that you hear some of my identity in there too!
I enjoy the way Jason approaches the harmonica. It's changed the way I think about and work with the harmonica for the better. It may be more accurate to say that just HAVING an approach in general to the harmonica has been a positive thing that's allowed me to begin carving out my own musical signature.
Attending the Harmonica Collective last year really gave me a boost in terms of inspiration and drive to step up my playing. I've been working extra hard lately in preparation for teaching at this years event. I hope to provide an exceptional experience for those that are able to attend. ---------- Ridge's YouTube

Does anyone know if Kim Wilson ever did teaching at an event similar to the Harmonica Collective? He'd be an ace card for attendance enrollees - even if all he taught was a headshake warble ( to do them justice ain't easy) :)

Where and when is the Saturday "club date where the Expert Guides get to finally cut loose for the people?"
I can't afford the Collective this year due not having gigged enough to support it (I want to get to SPAH again while it is still in the area), but I might be able to get myself organized for a trip from Urbana, IL to Indy to see the show. I assume there will be a cover charge?
Please get this info out, as there are many interested harp players in the area that for whatever reason can't make it to the workshops this year. Our loss...
By the way, as I posted above, the Harmonica Collective experience is wonderful, and I am really glad I was able to participate last year. Wish I could afford it this year... ----------

OK, I have a few minutes to write. Just got done making videos for the second edition of Harmonica For Dummies, which comes out in October. (Sad to say there wasn't time to hook up with anyone to get a tube amp, but I made do with what they had on hand and got decent results.)
Rosco is right that the Harmonica Collective is a teaching and learning event. We run full days of classes Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, hold elective evening classes on Thursday and Friday, and have jamming every night, Wednesday through Saturday, to help everyone develop their playing and performing skills and put to use some of the stuff they’ve learned during the day.
At the Collective, we'll do an orientation session on Wednesday evening and then have a jam. We were planning to hold some afternoon classes, but too many folks are coming in later in the day for that to work.
Thursday and Friday, we start with a full group meeting and a panel topic for the Expert Guides to discuss, and then take questions from the larger group.
The rest of the day is given to small groups, each taking a series of 75-minute classes. Each Expert Guide will teach three topics, and each group will receive each of those 15 topics. Of course you can break away from your group if there’s something you want to skip or repeat.
Also, if you’re feeling like the topic is a bit over your head, you can go hang with one of our guest stars, Buzz Krantz, or Dan Ridgeway, and they’ll help you get up to speed.
Classes on Thursday and Friday run from from 10AM to 5:45PM with a 90-minute lunch break. Jamming starts at 8PM but we'll also have elective classes at 7PM. One will be Jason and Randy Landry of Lone Wolf Blues on amplification and effects, while the other will be Richard Sleigh presenting the MB-30 X-reed harmonica.
Saturday we run classes from 9 to 4:30. with out final large group meeting devoted to a raffle and auction of the cool stuff donated or offered by our sponsors. We'll have an evening jam again to finish things off.
The Saturday trip to a local venue for a concert did not come to pass, unfortunately. The venue dropped the ball until it was too late to promote the event.
By the way, you can still register for the full event or for day passes for specific days. Sorry, I don't yet have a full schedule of which topics will be taught on what days and times; that's my next big task. But no matter what day you come, you'll get a ton of high-qualty information from top players and teachers. ---------- Winslow Find out about the 2014 Spring Harmonica Collective!
