For years I played with a harp, a mic, and an amp. Thats all there was. I look back at the harp players I fell in love with. Thats all they had. I doubt they had custom harps, pedals, and gear up the yin yang. Not that it's bad or good ( so glad to have a good AFB ). Have we gotten a little far afield or is it just the modern approach ?

It would be interesting to know what Little Walter would have used for a rig if he DID have access to modern gear. Remember he is credited with being the originator of using a guitar amplifier for harmonica, though that is very much open for debate. He also used studio effects, notably masses of reverb. In his day that was the modern approach.

It would seem to me ( only conjecture ) he would pick up something different. He was a innovator. Seems some of us try to reproduce that old sound that was present due to the type of gear that was available then, sort of stuck in time.

OT. Speaking of MWJ, I have different cd's of his where he does way different versions of the same songs. Juke for example.

@slimharp

Back in the days all you had was an amp, mic, and harp BECAUSE that's all there was available. Advances in technology yield progress, this applies to music.
If we all had that same sentiment, you would have no electricity, computer, internet, monitor, keyboard, etc in which to share your sentiment.

BTW: if you own a harp made in the last five years or so, you are by definition using "modern" equipment, so to answer your question..... Yes, it's the modern approach IMO ;)

CarlA - I didnt say that was my sentiment. I said that was the way it was and the harp players I loved played with. Not that it's bad or good. I was asking a question, not driving a point. Mellow down easy.

@slimharp

I was just replying to the question. I gave the answer a bit of an edge just to help dull the original loaded question ;)

i believe most of us are just searching for a sound we like. it doesn't matter if it's distorted or clean if you want it go for it. i like acoustic sound and if i had my druthers that is probably what i would play all of the time. that does not mean i don't want, like, or use modern equipment....hence the modern approach.

i also enjoy what i like to call lee oskars signature horn sound...those are my words not his but that's what i like to call it. that is what it reminds me of. i wish i knew what set up would give me that sound. i know he has many sounds but that is the way i describe the one i like the best. his is a modern approach even though he has been using it for, what, about 40 years.
