I would love to understand what exactly reed profiling is, and what benefit it brings to the harmonica.

When I think reed profile I think of the shape of the reed along its length from the pad to the tip.

A perfectly flat reed will have the bottom of the reed sitting in perfect alignment with top of the reed plate.

For a reed to move there must be a gap between the tip of the reed and the reed plate. This allows air to move over and around the reed creating turbulence which moves the reed. A longer reed requires more air and thus a larger (higher) gap.

The gap can be made by angling the reed from as close to the pad or some other spot along the reed and keeping it as flat as possible or the reed can be curved so it starts to rise more dramatically at some point along its length.

How the reed is profiled will affect its response. And, just like the profile of an airplane wing there is no one correct way. The profile should be done to accommodate the length of the reed and they style of the player.

Another part of the profile of the reed is its thickness from the pad to the tip. It can be uniformed or it can have different thicknesses along its length. You can also chamfer the reed along its edges which changes the profile across its width.

Thats interesting

Could you give a little more detail on the effect of profiling?

For example: how does a flat reed differ from one with curve spread along it's length?
