I got in trouble last summer with my landlord in my apt building. A new neighbor moved in, a composer, and apparently he likes it whisper quiet. He doesn't make a peep.
By then, my living room was set up like a studio. I had a PA and speaker to blast music at bar level, I was playing thru a 2x10 with a tube preamp, and I blow really hard and loud all the time.
I had to bite the bullet and admit I have to find a better place to practice. I wish I had a garage. The Guitar Center in Woodland Hills, CA has rooms you can rent, so I guess I'll have to do that.
It's a bummer, because I was all ready to do more videos. But my new plan is to find a studio room to rent, and make some videos. At least I won't have to hold back.

DukeB. Ever thought of busking? You can play loud/"practice" in the right place and maybe get some money for harps and such...

@Bronze That would be cool, I think I could handle that (playing alone, I mean). Could practice singing, too, which I am too self conscious to do in my apt.

By the way, when I walk around my neighborhood, I hear an opera singer, a violin player, and multiple guitar players practicing. Plus, every 5 minutes a car goes by blasting gangsta rap. I love it all, and I think I'm being singled out. Sorry if I like loud, ear bleeding blues harp played in way to knock down buildings. If you're a composer, and you want it quiet, don't work out of your apt - get a studio.

Sounds like the composer is a bit precious. I think you would like busking, DukeB. It's a great chance to practice. I always have fun when I go out. Sing too. That takes a bit more guts but it is also fun to sing busking. I do it in duo and solo formats.

Duke you had all that set up in an apartment and expected your neighbour(s) to put up with it? In my younger days i lived in rented accommodation and having a loud neighbour was a nightmare. In one case of 16 hours a day Reggae, the nails started popping out of the wallboard it was so loud. Any music though,if you don't want to hear it,can be a pain in the arse. How would you like it if a new guy moved in next door and played music at "bar level" just as you go to bed. I lived for quite afew years on a rural property so i could turn it up and not worry anybody but now i am back in suburbia i keep the volumes down. It's called consideration.

@jehosaphat the OP did say he was there first and the composer moved in and then demanded quiet, not the other way round.

@Jehosaphat Well, I only played between 12pm and 5pm on weekdays, not everyday, and only for 1 hour at a time. Tried to be cool about it.
Meanwhile, a completely different DJ neighbor brought in a drummer for two full days of recording. That's too much.

@lumpy Yeah but when you take up a lease you often don't even get to see let alone meet your new neighbours. Could be a serial killer or even worse a loud harmonica player.^ @duke. In that case why don't you go and see him for a chat. He must go out sometimes ,just have an agreement to only play when he is out.Buy him a case of beer or something in thanks. If he is a composer he must be able to play some instrument or other.Maybe have a jam together while you drink the beers.

I'd really like to do something like that. When I got my new amp, I went over and knocked his door to warn him, but he didn't answer. I fooled around with it for a little while and then put it away.
But I figured out which car is his, so I made a little video today when he was out. One thing is for sure, I can't lose this place.

Yeah Duke going to take a little finesse smoozing with the guy,but bet you will find some middle ground.Had it made for awhile at my condo complex, and then they moved in with kids.Told them I crank it up 4 to 7pm every day, offered to be a good neighbor,no problemo.
