I have my little 5W amp with three tubes hanging down and a power cable with a great big 13 amp plug on the end. Those familiar with the UK 13 amp plug will know it's great in terms of electrical engineering but a bit of a liability in terms of the physical damage it can do, with its weighty body and sharp copper prongs. Many UK parents have stepped on one, getting up in the night.

I've had big guitar amps before with lots of space, but in the 5W amp the space is tight. Is there a practical thing to do to prevent damage, or should the cable just not be stowed there?

Can't say that I've ever had a problem with stowing them inside small amps or anything else. If it worries you then you could always take it off and add some kind of connector. Although personally I don't think it's worth bothering. I think you're worrying over nothing.

Great, I'll not worry about it then.

In the IT world they're often scratching expensive things up in luggage e.g. laptops, tablets PCs, but that's slightly different problem. You can put the plastic prong covers on.
