I have been playing a little over a year now, and I am starting to think about how to structure practice time so that I can continue to develop while maintaining learned skills.

If I have an hour for practice (to keep things simple), I will probably break the time down like this:
5-10 minute warmup (practicing scales or previously learned songs)
10 minutes working on technique (like bending, vibrato, slaps)
15-20 minutes improvising to a jam track
The remaining time would be spent working on new material, like a song I'm trying to learn or exercises from various harmonica books.

How do you structure your practice time? Or, do you think that playing harmonica should be "playing", and you find my routine too structured?

As a life long jammer, I never really practiced per say. I never tried to emulate anyone. My "practice" was turning on the radio or queing up an album. I would then try to play along with every song that showed up. Just like a jam. With the radio, you had one chance to figure out the key and get something to work, musically speaking. With recorded material, you can repeate obviously. From what I read around here, I guess I'm a little different but it worked for me...BN

I use an interesting approach w/students...it works in conjunction with the accelerated techniques I've developed.

Once the beginner has bends under control, groove understood and where all the notes live, I will suggest "There is NO PRACTICE. Everything is performance, even when you are alone in your room."

In other words, everything that Mirco is doing may be considered performance rather than practice...no matter the level.

This gives a jump start to playing in front of others.

(My personal philosophy)
