OK, on your MV amp. How do you set up your controls? Please state what amp you are referring to. Thanks...BN

Two of my amps have master volume. This is my approach, not necessarily the only or best way to do it, but it works for me.
Unless I already know about EQ issues with the mic amp combination, I leave those flat, maybe with a small treble cut.
I turn the master all the way up, then slowly bring up the gain while playing. I work to get the tone I want, even if it is too loud, using the gain, and the tone controls. Then I cut the master back to the volume I want, if it is too loud, and then adjust for tone again.
This works for me on my two amps with Master Volume. ----------

I have a modified Blues Jr. If I want crunchy distorted tone I crank the volume to 10 or 11 and use the master to control how loud I want it. If I want cleaner tone I back off on the volume control to about 5 or 6 and again use the master to set how loud I want it. This depends on the size of the room and how close you have to be to your amp and usually requires a bit of time to get the tone just right. Seems to work for me.

I have 2 amps like this. On my little Vibro champ xd I set the gain around 3 and the volume where I want it. I might put gain to 4 if I can only turn vol to 6 or so. That's a thing with a preamp chip with amp voices that have preset gain levels. Most are not much good for the harp, but the so called 'clean blackface' is quite useable and responds well to the controls. Basically, always vol higher than gain, and gain always shy of 12 o'clock. Same kind of deal with my Ashton Viper 30. That's a 2x EL34 thing. I think there is a Randall 30 watt amp of very similar design which people outside Australia may be more likely to have experienced. Anyway, same there, gain about 9 o'clock , vol maybe 3 and swing around in that zone to find what works. If it's too loud I might bring the vol down (duh) and if that's too clean probably bring the gain up. It's seldom too clean or too loud though. If I've chosen that amp it signifies a loud situation. The DeVille has that kind of control too, on the drive channels, but I never use that stuff. Strictly clean channel. ----------
