I'm a relatively new player. Please help me train my developing ear for harmonica.

I was watching this and enjoying some great Kim Wilson skill and showmanship when I started to read the comments... One person said: "I love his stuff in 1st position" and that made me wonder... which part is in 1st position? The first part or the part after he pulls a different harp out of his pocket at 5:12ish. Yikes! I'm embarrassed that I can't tell...

Someone else commented: "That's a lot of overblows on the high end" But to me it just sounds like some really killer use of blow bends. Am I way off?

Someone help me understand what I am listening to!

Lots of people who use the term overblow don't know what they are. And people who comment on Youtube videos are usually idiots.

Thanks guys!

Still... if I had my eyes closed, I don't think I'd have known he was playing in a different position. It all sure sounds like cross harp to me. Are there any distinguishing features/sounds that I can be listening for in order to tell when someone if playing 1st position blues?

Listen to Jimmy Reed. He did a lot in 1st position.

You have to put in the time listening on your own. Each harmonica position has a distinct "sound". Since describing sounds and music with words is one step removed from the real essence, my advice is listen listen listen until you start to hear it for yourself.

The 8+', 9'+ and 10+'' blow bends fit nicely into the blues scale in first position, so you usually hear them in that position. The 10+'' is also the flat 3rd in 2nd position, so you might hear that one in 2nd.
