I'm seriously considering changing the preamp valves for obvious reasons! I have a custom vibrolux and a super reverb which both have 3 - 4 12 ax7 in preamp section, how many do I need to change and is it possible to also use as a regular guitar amp with a bit mo're clean headroom?
Cheers in advance

Get yourself a handfull of 12A?7's/5751's and try them. That is the only way to find what you like. The higher your skill level, the more gain you can handle. Never stand in front of your amp, stand beside it. *In front is for geetar*...BN

The higher your skill level the more gain you can handle. True. But that doesn't mean "... the more gain you WANT." If you can get your amp to feedback, you are getting as much volume as you can use. If you can do that with the knob turned way up, then you will have better control. There are differing opinions on this but my preference is to get the gain WAY down. I use 12AU's except in V1 where I leave a 12AX7. On your amp I believe the 4th 12AX is for the reverb? Don't change that one.

Thanks Greg, I'll give it a go, ite only at gig levels where sometimes the amp is not in an ideal position, I don't try to use too much preamp gain, more power amp grind!
