Well, I know that crystal elements go bad pretty quick if not handled well and word is they loose strength.
I have traced some of my issues to other elements. Curious, what is the expected life of CM, CR and dynamic elements and any hallmarks of when they are going off? None of them can last forever, any hints on what to look for other than reduced signal if they are and how long the average lifetime?
Thanks....

For 13 years of playing I kill 2 dynamic elements Shure 520DX, Shure SM57. The started sound muddy and with noticeable lack of high frequencies. Possible because I dropped them several times. ---------- Excuse my bad English.

The CM and CR elements have lasted very, very well - but they do go bad. When they do it is usually a result of corrosion which can cause friction as the pin that drops into the coil from the center of the diaphragm begins to rub on something - which can diminish output. Sometimes this will be noticed with positive pressure (blow) but not negative (draw) or vice versa. Also, although it is very rare, the glue can fail where the pin is affixed to the diaphragm - so the vibrational energy doesn't get translated into electrical energy.
On that topic - I have a small pile of these, which Chuck Gurney used to fix for me. I know Chuck had some health issues a while back but he vowed to come back. However I've failed to get any response at all from him in the last several months. Does anyone know if he's OK? ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

One of my CR elements had tbe issues that Greg describes. Chuck G said the diaphragm came loose from the pin. He fixed it. Good as new. I hope he's doing better now. ---------- Music speaks where words fail.
