Please save the date. Ronnie Shellist and I will be giving our first duo workshop/blowoff in the southeast. We're 99% of the way to a formal announcement, but it's not too early to give a save-the-date announcement, with some basic (and exciting) details.
The workshop and blowoff, set for Saturday March 8, will take place at a venue in the greater Orlando area, not far from the airport. The venue is located in a modestly priced hotel, facilitating a post-day collapse into bed without fear of drunk driving on the way home.
The price of the all-day workshop, 10-6 plus an hour of meet and greet on the front end, is $65.
The show + blowoff that evening will be hosted by R. J. Harman and his band. RJ is an exciting, high-powered player who will have no trouble kicking my ass in the Open Division part of the competition--although I will woodshed hard and do my best not to let that happen.
Ronnie will play a full set with RJ's band.
During my own set. I will be appearing with guitarist Alan Gross as The Blues Doctors. We'll have plenty of copies of the new album for sale.
Details and registration details TBA.

My kids have been wanting to go to Disney World, never made it. Now may be the time. I wonder if they still want to go? Ems 29th birthday is coming up.

opines Kudzu "RJ is an exciting, high-powered player who will have no trouble kicking my ass in the Open Division part of the competition-"
Sounds like you have decided that this will be the outcome, and it's 3 months out yet.
Best way to "headcut", if that's your desire, is when RJ plays a cascade of notes, answer with a few well placed long tones and solid musical lines.
When RJ plays faster and louder, you respond by playing slower and quieter.
I won a lot of competitions (including Barrett's Workshop Blow Off) in the 90's using this approach.
Sshhh. Don't tell anyone else. ---------- The Iceman

What if they play slow and quiet with great long beautiful musical lines?

@Frank - Then you just play nothing and leave everyone in anticipation.

Wish I was in town then, but I am scheduled to be in a land far, far away. RJ is a nice kid, and an entertaining player with a good band. You guys will have loads of fun.

I've seen/heard RJ play at the Florida Harmonica Championships. He is an amazing player. He makes extensive - I mean extensive - use of over-blows and over-draws. And he is young. As RJ matures he will only get better. ---------- Tom Halchak www.BlueMoonHarmonicas.com

Is the workshop too advanced for a second year student?? Easy for me to attend (live in Jax,FL) but worry that it will be over my head. I agree RJ is a great player--I also heard him at the FL harp championships in October.

I'm about 1 hour 15 minutes north of Jacksonville and teach all levels (preferring new or almost new students as they haven't had time to develop bad habits).
Taught RJ for 3 years when he was starting out.

In answer to your question, Cotton: I think you'll be fine as a second-year student. After our experience in Campbell CA this fall, where we had two raw beginners who WERE intimidated (a bend? what's a bend?), I don't think that players on that entrance level are right for us. But a second-year student? Absolutely.
