Maybe a song you should have in your repertoir as a harmonica player. The question is: how do you play this damn solo-thing?!
I don't try to play it exactly like "The Bear" does but this one high note (the flatted 3rd) is so characteristic that I just don't want to leave it out. I'm used to play it on the 6th overblow but on the record he slides into that note so smoothly that it can't be an overblow.
Is his harp in an alternative tuning or does he play the song in a different position?
How do you deal with it when you play that song?

Alternative tuning. Raised 6. And it´s not The Bear but The Blind Owl.
If you don´t want to destroy/re-tune a harmonica you can try it in 3 pos.

Oh, thanks, i thought it was The Bear because i saw him playing the harmonica in a video of another song. I didn't know Wilson also plays the harmonica i should definitely listen to this band more often.
Are there more songs played in this tuning? I never played other tunings than the standard-Richter.

I believe that the Bear was actually miming playing the harp on some of those videos they made after the death of the Owl.
Canned Heat are a great band to play along with, they did a lot of straight ahead blues and boogies. Blind Owl was a very good player and one of those with his own distinctive sound.(and voice)

Two words that should always follow the name Alan Wilson: Musical Genius. Still seems he doesn't always receive the props he deserves. He was nothing short of f***ing musically amazing and left us way too soon.

Check out the Hooker & Heat album: Jason's video (mentioned above) got me onto it. Namely the song Boogie Chillen No. 2. Coincidentally I was listening today and it has a great little solo.

There are several Wilson solos on "Hooker & Heat" -- but I agree entirely with jbear, a great little solo on "Boogie chillun". (Back in the day that shift to the G harp took me quite a while to figure out ...)
This is not only a great tune in itself, a hypnotic one chord/one riff boogie, it´s also one of the greatest moments in Hooker´s long career, and most certainly in Canned Heat´s.

This is Alan kicking it with Son House (who he taught to play guitar "like Son House" again after having not played for 30 years) Owl was 22 when he recorded this...

There is a 2 CD retrospective of early Canned Heat.
Lots of excellent basic blues tunes and wonderful simple yet effective harmonica playing. ---------- The Iceman

Learn to play the 6OB, or tune the 7 draw down. You'll get way more use out of a harp with either of those setups and tuning the 5 hole differently. ---------- Mantra Customized Harmonicas My Website

Such an amazing story that. And for me he recorded some of his greatest stuff even though he hadn’t played for so long
