His was the first book I bought on fixin harps :)
Got this news from SlideMeister Forum :(
Sadly, I must report the passing of Blackie Schackner on Nov. 19, 2013. As many of you know, Blackie had been ill for several years and was living in a care center for two years. Blackie passed peacefully last night. He was 96 years of age. He and his wife observed their 73 wedding anniversary yesterday, Nov. 19, 2013. Blackie is survived buy his wife Bertha, son Robert, daughter Linda, and several grandchildren. Blackie was one of the "Greatest" harmonica players and I'm certain will be missed by all that knew him and had the pleasure of seeing him perform. I never had that privilege, but I had the honor of being his friend and neighbor for 18 years. A memorial service is planned at a later date.
Blackie' s friend, Larry Wilson Regards, The SlideMeister Forum Team.

Sad news. I learned from his book as well. I met a guy who knew him, and encouraged me to meet him, but I felt very self conscious. Its one of the things I regret: they say he was a sweet, sweet man.

Vicki and I knew Blackie from booking him for SPAH, arranging musicians to back him up and just hanging out with him.
He was a true professional and a lot of fun to be around. ---------- The Iceman

Here's a photo of Blackie Schackner, Toots Thielemans, and the Iceman, from the 1999 SPAH convention:

SPAH will be running a biographical article on Blackie, who was much loved in the harmonica community. I still have a Toots Hard bopper chromatic that Blackie customized for me; it's one of my best harps. ---------- Winslow

Sad news. He was a great guy and terrific chromatic player and learned quite a bit from his books. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I actually pulled his book out a couple of months ago. Its a fun read.
96 is a pretty good innings. I'd be happy with that.
