I just got to play with his son last night - Nicky Otis is a fine drummer. Johnny Otis was GREAT.

Check out this swinging' band, from the Johnny Otis show of the 50's.. I just watched the whole thing - there is some SWINGIN' stuff with Otis drumming and Lionel Hampton on vibes - plus some great ads for Metropolitan Ford. Ahh, it was a simpler time....... before I was born.

Like have in the "blues cruise" on your TV set - Johnny has that Rick Estrin Cool persona nailed - though Johnny is first :) And does any one notice that Jason plays his harp like Lionel plays the vibes...That had to be a treat playing with his Son Greg!!

I worked as a freelance music writer in the Seventies and had, along with a friend Barry Alfonso, the privilege of interviewing Otis in his Los Angeles home. He had become a minister and converted his house into his church. He was a genuinely decent man, and he spoke of spirituality, social justice and the need for art education to cultivate what is good and creative in young people. For the service he had the Incredible Smith playing organ and I was in a pew next to Della Reese. It was a wonderful experience.

When I was a teenager, most kids had posters of rock bands and whatever on their walls. I had only one poster, from the album, Johnny Otis Live at The Monetrey. It was classic!

Johnny, Shuggie, Little Esther Philips, Roy Brown, PeeWee Crayron, Roy Milton, Ivory Joe Humter, Mighty Mouth Evans, The Mighty Flea,Big Joe Turner, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson and Margie Evans.
