I have a jt30 vc with xlr connection and 90s Mc151 crystal in it. It plays great and then it will get static and cut in and out sometimes. Could it be a problem with the xlr, the volume pot, or is this a symptom of what happens to a crystal before it bites the dust. I considered changing the xlr or bypassing the volume pot but don't want to go through that if I need a new element. Any ideas?

I believe crystals often lose volume before they die, unless they just cut out altogether.
I'd be guessing bad connection either at the xlr, pot, jack at the other end or even the cable.
Start by trying different cable, thereby eliminating two of the variables.

The xlr to quarter inch plug cord I have is not the cord that came with the Mic but it is a new cable. What do they have connected to the 3rd pin hole inside the cable connector and could that be giving me a problem?

It could be any of those things. Usually the elements get weaker and then they die completely but it would be unusual for them to become intermittent - so I think the chances are better that it is something else (which is good because that means "something less expensive to fix".

Can you make it happen when you wiggle the volume knob? Then its the pot.

Can you make it happen when you wiggle the XLR connector? Then its the mic's connector or the cable.

If it is more random than that open the mic and check for loose wires at every point where they're soldered. A "cold" solder joint can look like it soldered but the wire can actually move - and lose contact.

I took out the xlr and installed a 1/4" guitar jack and now it is working great. but if anyone wants to try this and leave the volume control in there is barely enough room you even have to shave a little metal off the volume pot for the jack to fit and the little round protrusion in the middle of the back of the mc151 has to be nipped off or it grounds out against the plug jack.
