Official release date for the debut Blues Doctors album, ROOSTERS HAPPY HOUR, is November 15th, but y'all are special, so I'm giving you the jump.

Here's the album page on this website:

I'll be happy to answer questions about the recording/mixing/mastering process.

One note: because the preview file plays for more than 5 minutes, it sometimes takes a little longer to load than optimal: about 15 seconds. I felt that the length was necessary in order to give folks a sense of what was on the album. (The preview button is located toward the upper right side of the purchase page(s).)

Second note: the album will be on iTunes and Amazon by January 1. I wanted a delay between this soft open, so to speak, and the full-bore buy-it-anywhere moment. CDs are being manufactured as we speak; I plan to send those to DJs and sell 'em at gigs, but at some point in the future I'll also sell them off this website.

Third note: Although this won't be apparent if you play the preview on your laptop or home computer, the kickdrum is putting out a lot of bottom end. I deliberated long and hard, alone and in conference with the recording/editing and mastering engineers, over how much (and what kind of) thump should find its way into each cut. As folks who've done this before know, it's important to play an album-in-progress on various sorts of playback devices, large and small. In any case, this was a key element of the whole thing: in a two-man band without a bass player, how much more bottom end should the kickdrum provide than it would ordinarily provide on a trio-type album?

Final note: Grant Kessler did an absolutely phenomenal job on the album design. The cover is the least of it. He did a five-star, A++ job, creatively (the design itself) and professionally (executing everything in a way that let my replicating company jump right on it). And the price was right! If you need album design, please consider using him.

I had a slight advantage in getting this album a little earlier than most so I may have heard it before a lot of the forum members and I must say, Boy, are you in for a treat. It is superb.

In no particular order my favourite tracks were Sugar, and two really energetic, driving tracks, Southern Jump and Sidewalk Revival. But hey, they're all good solid tracks. I know you'll love it. Harp playing at its best.

Not quite an empire, just a sprawling website and a few self-issued, self-financed albums. By the time I take delivery and send out a hundred CDs to DJs, this album will have cost me about $4500. No Kickstarter, no nothing. So I tell you what? If you make a $10 donation via PayPal, I'll send you a free album download.

Preview video for the album just uploaded to YouTube. My stylistics in the opening 20 seconds are a shameless ripoff of Alex Paclin.

Nice work and playing Adam...

You are one of the most perpetual of individuals I have ever come across. There seems to be a non-stop delivery of actions, events, ideas etc from you...

May I inquire...

How do you stay so determined, focused and motivated?

What is your diet and exercise regimen?

The books that have guided your maturity and professionalism?

The Men or women who have influenced your work ethic, beliefs, etc?

Thank you :)

@Frank: You're so puckish! You've asked so many questions about the "recording process"--the topic area I said I'd be happy to answer questions on--that I just don't know where to start!

See below for answers:

How do you stay so determined, focused and motivated?
AG: I think about my own mortality (the implacable, if still hopefully distant, approach of death) on a weekly, if not quite daily, basis.

What is your diet and exercise regimen?
AG: I eat lots of salads and granola, few sweets (because I find them addicting), chicken once or twice a week, steak and fish occasionally. I'm an omnivore. I run 30-50 miles a week.

The books that have guided your maturity and professionalism?
AG: Pema Chodron's WHEN THINGS FALL APART: HEART ADVICE FOR DIFFICULT TIMES, which Jason Ricci took off his shelf and put into my hands the day I got out of the hospital after a minor heart attack in 2000. My current favorite book is Joe Bastianich's RESTAURANT MAN. Every word reminds me of tough, salty, cynical, energetic, creative guys I used to know back at Dan Lynch's blues bar--guys like the late Frankie Paris, blues singer/showman extraordinaire.

The Men or women who have influenced your work ethic, beliefs, etc?
AG: My parents, Joan and Alan Gussow; Sterling Magee, who strongly shaped my approach to music-making; Margo Lewis, head of Talent Consultantants International and our first real manager, who taught me the rest of what it means to be a working professional musician; Rachel Faro, who taught me most of what I know about the recording studio; Bryan W. Ward, who taught me the rest; Trip Henderson, who taught me much of what I know about amplifying and miking the harmonica; Will Howarth, my mentor in grad school, who taught by example what good mentoring is.

Puckish....hahahahahahaha - I must of learned that from my cats :)

Adam, I hope that you are used as a case study either while your alive or after your dead...

There is something important to be learned from you, that hopefully can be mined and used to help others who lack purpose, vision and creativity.

I'm serious...you Probably could write a motivational type selfhelp book, showing folk a pathway to success and happiness :)
