Does anyone sing through an SM57? I realize that the SM58 is the preferred vocal mic and the SM 57 is the preferred instrument mic, but I'm wondering which mic would be best for double duty. Thanks.

The SM57 works fine as a vocal mic but you have to be careful to stay pretty well centered. Because for vocals you're going to want a fairly clean sound - usually a PA - then you're not going to get a real dirty sound no matter what mic you use. If you want amplified blues tone then either use two mics, or run the mic through a pedal like the Lone Wolf Harp Attack - and plug into the PA. Pedal off for vocals, on for harp solos. If you don't care about a dirty blues tone and prefer acoustic harp plus vocals - then might as well use a 58 as the pickup pattern is a little more forgiving. ---------- *************************************************** /Greg

I use the 57 for double duty. Greg's right on about being centered on this mic for vocals. I have a Bulletizer on mine, so I just keep my mouth right on the harp and sing through it. The phrase "Eat the mic" aplies in this instance. When I play with my band, I go right in to the PA with no pedal. Just a little delay dialed in with the mixer, or I run a line out from my amp into the board. ---------- You Tube = goshinjk
I'm workin on it. I'm workin on it.

Sm57 is great for vocals and when cupped is an excellent harp mike.
For vocals getting to close will increase the lows (proximity effect)
I echo Greg and 2chops on staying centered on the mike.
Many vocalists prefer the 57 to the 58 maybe because of the ability to create a wider variety of vocal color...

I have sung through one but since my voice and a harp have fairly opposite needs I prefer two mics, one for voice and one for harp. For harp,an sm57 compresses pretty well with a tight cup and can be made to work pretty well but I prefer a high z mic and a tube amp generally.
Vocals are good with the 57 for me since I do eat the mic generally, but since I have a beta 58 there's no need. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

I use a 57 as a vocal mic all the time.
